2018EXCELLENCE AWARDS NOMINATION INFORMATION

On Tuesday, April 3rd, 2018, the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life will hold its annual Excellence Awards to recognize the accomplishments of the James Madison University fraternity and sorority community. Attendees are encouraged to attend the social hour from 6:00 – 7:00 pm in Festival Ballrooms B/C. A formal ceremony will begin at 7:00 pm in Festival Ballroom A.

Individual Awards

Community members are invited to nominate individuals from both within and outside their chapters whom they feel meet or exceed the criteria outlined by each award. A list of the individual honors awarded is below; please see the following pages for more specific information about each award.

  • The Clive Hallman Outstanding Chapter Advisor Award (one award)
  • Outstanding New Member in a Fraternity and Sorority (two awards)
  • Outstanding Executive Member in a Fraternity and Sorority (two awards)
  • Council Member of the Year (two awards)
  • Fraternity Man/Sorority Woman of the Year (two awards)

Chapter Awards

Community members are also invited to nominate recognized chapters that they feel meet or exceed the criteria outlined by each award. A list of the chapter honors awarded is below; please see the following pages for more specific information about each award.

Outstanding Philanthropic Event/Program (one award)

Individual Awards

  1. The Clive Hallman Outstanding Chapter Advisor Award: A fraternityor sorority chapter advisor who provides superior advising and service to individual members of his or her chapter, the chapter itself, and to the fraternity and sorority community as a whole.

In your nomination, you will be asked to comment upon the following questions:

  1. In what way(s) has this advisor supported and advocated for individual members of the chapter?
  2. In what way(s) has this advisor supported and advocated for the chapter itself?
  3. In what way(s) has this advisor supported and advocated from the fraternity and sorority community as a whole?
  1. Outstanding New Member in a Fraternity and Sorority: A fraternity and sorority new member that has distinguished him and herself during their first year of membership. Students who joined in Spring 2017 and Fall 2017 are eligible for this award.
In your nomination, you will be asked to comment upon the following questions:
  1. What impact did this person have on the chapter’s new member education?
  2. How did this person transition from being a new member to an active member?
  3. What set this new member apart from other new members during his or her new member period?

3.Outstanding Executive Member in a Fraternity and Sorority: Anexecutiveboard member (including the President) of a fraternity and sorority whose leadership has made a significant impact upon his or her chapter.

In your nomination, you will be asked to comment upon the following questions:

  1. What qualities does the nominee possess that have facilitated their success?
  2. In what way(s) has the nominee positively impacted his/her chapter?
  3. What sets this person apart from other officers/leaders in the chapter?
  1. Council Member of the Year: A council member from the Interfraternity and Panhellenic Councils who demonstrates excellence in leadership, campus relations and chapter development, and who has made significant contributions to his/her council and the University community as a whole.

In your nomination, you will be asked to comment upon the following questions:

  1. What qualities does the nominee possess that have facilitated their success?
  2. What successes has this person helped his/her council achieve?
  3. What sets this person apart from other council leaders?
  1. Fraternity Man and Sorority Woman of the Year: A fraternity and sorority member in good standing with the chapter and university whose leadership has made a significant impact upon his or her chapter and the University community as a whole.

In your nomination, you will be asked to comment upon the following questions:

  1. What qualities does the nominee possess that have facilitated his/her success?
  2. In what way(s) has the nominee positively impacted his/her chapter and the community?
  3. What sets this person apart from other leaders in the fraternity and sorority community?

Chapter Awards

1. Outstanding Philanthropic Event/Program: Awarded to one chapter that has organized and implemented an outstandingcharitable fundraising program or event (evidenced by charitable service to the university, national or local philanthropy and/or fraternity and sorority community).

In your nomination, you will be asked to comment upon the following questions:

  1. Describe the event in detail. How was it planned, executed, and evaluated?
  2. Which community(ies) were most impacted by the event, and in what way(s) were they impacted?
  3. What sets this event apart from other philanthropic events/programs hosted by the fraternity and sorority community?

2. Outstanding Educational Program: Awarded to one chapter that has organized an implemented an outstanding non-scholastic educational program (for the chapter and/or the fraternity and sorority/University communities) in such areas as new member education, continuing chapter education, personal development, or awareness programming.

In your nomination, you will be asked to comment upon the following questions:

  1. Describe the program in detail. How was it planned, executed, and evaluated?
  2. Which organizational or campus issue did the program address, and in what way(s) did it address this issue?
  3. What sets this event apart from other programming hosted by the fraternity and sorority community?

3. Ethical Reasoning in Action Award: Chapters in the University community are expectedto consist of citizens who are morally, ethically, and service-minded. Chapters that go beyond the letter of their expectations and embrace the spirit of their chapter’s values, mission, and vision will be recognized with the Ethical Reasoning in Action Award.

In your nomination, you will be asked to comment upon the following questions:

  1. How has the chapter created meaningful change or growth in the fraternity and sorority/University communities? Please use specific examples to support your nomination.
  2. Looking back on the actions the chapter took to enhance the community, which of the Eight Key Questions from the Madison Collaborative were used in planning, implementation and evaluation? For a complete description of the 8KQ and information on the Madison Collaborative, please visit

Chapter Awards determined by the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life

1.Excellence in Academic Achievement: This award is based on chapters’ Accreditation Program scores. The fraternity and sorority that score in the top three in this category will receive a bronze start (3rd), silver star (2nd), or gold star (1st) rating.

2.Excellence in Citizenship and Social Responsibility: This award is based on chapters’ Accreditation Program scores. The fraternity and sorority that score in the top three in this category will receive a bronze start (3rd), silver star (2nd), or gold star (1st) rating.

  1. Excellence in Member Development: This award is based on chapters’ Accreditation Program scores. The fraternity and sorority that score in the top three in this category will receive a bronze start (3rd), silver star (2nd), or gold star (1st) rating.
  1. Excellence in Service and Philanthropy: This award is based on chapters’ Accreditation Program scores. The fraternity and sorority that score in the top three in this category will receive a bronze start (3rd), silver star (2nd), or gold star (1st) rating.

5. Most Improved Chapter: Awarded to the fraternity and sorority that exhibits significant improvement in one or more of the following areas: academic achievement, citizenship and social responsibility, member development, and service and philanthropy.

6. Chapter of the Year: Awarded to the fraternity and sorority that have exhibited superior achievement in the areas of academic achievement, citizenship and social responsibility, member development, and service and philanthropy. This fraternity and sorority have worked to cultivate cross-campus relationships, serve local and national communities, and to implement creative measures to promote their image positively. This fraternity and sorority encourage others to believe in something bigger than themselves, to set an example by remembering their values, and to live their ritual.
