Information about college scholarships and financial aid opportunities that comes to the Hartsville High School Guidance Department is published in a Scholarship Newsletter each month. This information is delivered to all seniors during their advisory period each month. It is the responsibility of the student to share this information with parents and guardians.

2018 Journalism Contest “Inclusion Drives Innovation” Sponsored by SC Governor’s Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities

Who: Seniors

Criteria: The student must write an article addressing the theme: “Inclusion Drives Innovation.” A FAFSA must be submitted as well.

Who: Seniors

Criteria: Complete the College Application Month Student Survey.

2018 GE-Reagan Foundation Scholarship

Who: Seniors

Criteria:

  • demonstrate at school, at the workplace, and within the community the attributes of leadership, drive, integrity, and citizenship;
  • demonstrate strong academic performance (minimum 3.0 grade point average/4.0 scale or equivalent);
  • be citizens of the United States of America;
  • be current high school seniors attending high school in the United States (students living on U.S. Armed Forces base and homeschooled students are also eligible); and
  • plan to enroll in a full-time undergraduate course of study toward a bachelor’s degree at an accredited four-year college or university in the United States for the entire upcoming academic year.

Amount: $10,000 per year for 4 years

The American Legion “A Constitution Speech Contest”

Who: High School Students

Criteria: Contestants shall present a prepared oration of not less than 8 or more than 10 minutes and such oration must be without the aid of notes, and the original effort of each contestant.

Amount: Up to $18,000

Who: Seniors

Criteria: Minimum GPA of 2.5. Also, the applicant or a direct family member must have been personally affected by an injury of some type.

Only one entry per person.

The Christian Connector

What: A free Christian college information service as well as a $2,500 Christian college scholarship drawing.

Union Plus Scholarship

Who: High School Students

Criteria: Current and retired members of participating unions, their spouses and their dependent children (as defined by IRS regulations). At least one year of continuous union membership by the applicant, applicant's spouse or parent (if applicant is a dependent). The one year membership minimum must be satisfied by May 31, 2018. This is a competitive scholarship. Applicants are evaluated according to academic ability, social awareness, financial need and appreciation of labor. A GPA of 3.0 or higher is recommended. The required essays can account for up to half your total score. Scholarship applicants are judged by a committee of impartial post-secondary educators.

ACT Student Champion

Criteria: A student who has overcome challenges and can articulate education and career actions. Students must have a compositeACTscore of a 22 on a single test date or a 3.0 or greater on a 4.0 scale. Preference will be given to underrepresented and/or first-generation college students.

Who: High school students

Criteria: Create a script or storyboard for a 30-second public service announcement (PSA) to help prevent speeding.

The Secure Optimal Yield Scholarship (SOY)

Who: Seniors who are going to pursue agriculture as a degree area of study at any accredited college or university.

Criteria: GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale and must be the child or grandchild of a current ASA (American Soybean Association) member. ACT/SAT scores are considered, as well as an essay, letters of recommendation, and extracurricular activities/leadership skills in agriculture activities. Applicants must achieve a college GPA of 2.5 during their first semester of freshman year to obtain the full scholarship. Student’s parent or grandparent must remain a current member throughout the tenure of the student’s scholarship.

Amount: $2,500 per semester for one year
