Industry Tour Descriptions of the Greater Richmond Area

The Jefferson Hotel

Participants will take an inside look at the daily operations of The Jefferson Hotel. The tour will include all service and administrative areas of the hotel; both front and back of the house. Department heads and managers will provide tours of their respective areas while sharing information on operations, service standards, training and key positions.

Kings Dominion

Participants will tour the park and discuss the obvious and not-so obvious ins and outs of management of a popular theme park. A behind-the-scenes walking tour will provide information easily integrated into classroom instruction about Kings Dominion’s hiring and training practices, safety in the park, and skills that they look for in potential part-time and full-time employees. Wear your comfortable walking shoes and see what makes Kings Dominion the place your students (and maybe even you!) want to visit and to work.

Richmond National Battlefield Park and Maggie L. Walker National Historic Site

Participants will tour Tredegar Historic Site, part of Richmond National Battlefield Park and Maggie L. Walker National Historic Site, and talk with park staff about career opportunities within the National Park Service. Both national parks in Richmond protect and preserve America’s rich Civil War and Civil Rights history and provide cultural and recreational opportunities to more than 250,000 visitors annually.

VCU Health

Participants will take a behind the scenes tour of what it takes to keep a three million square foot hospital running. We will start off by giving you a quick debrief of our campus and department. During the tour, you will see how we use state of the art computers to control many different aspects of the healthcare setting. The group will get to see what HVAC, electrical and medical gas infrastructure goes into keeping the lights on and the air cool for all who visit our campus.

Architectural Outfitters

Participants will experience a demonstration of how commercial cabinetry and millwork is designed and built along with a discussion of career opportunities in this field.

Participants will experience a high-level overview of what happens after Amazon customers click buy. Visitors will see a first-hand look of the inbound and outbound operations.

NOTE: Participants may bring keys, wallet, and cellphone on the tour. All other personal items including bags, purses, briefcases, backpacks, and binoculars are not allowed. A bag for medical reasons is permitted. No cameras or other video equipment is allowed. Cell phones may not be used to take photos. All guests must wear flat, closed toe and closed heel shoes (no sandals or high heels). Comfortable shoes and sneakers are recommended.

Flexicell – A Pearson Packaging Systems Company

Participants will learn about mechanical, electrical and controls engineering as well as manufacturing career opportunities at Flexicell’s make to order robotic integration business, and learn how Flexicall attracts, develops, and trains technical talent from Virginia’s education systems. The tour will include a description of Flexicell’s manufacturing capabilities as well as a demonstration of robotic systems in process at the facility.

HandCraft Linen Services

Participants will tour the plant facilities and learn about opportunities in the HealthCare linen industry. The tour will provide insight on how to offer the highest quality medical linen and apparel products while also using the most efficient and green services. The tour will also illustrate how HandCraft has used high tech systems and technologies to set the pace for healthcare linen industries.
