2018 Black History Month Essay & Poster Contest

Chesapeake Lighthouse Foundation (CLF) is very excited to announce that we are sponsoring a Black History Month Essay Contest. This contest will challenge the students and help teach them about significant contributions that African Americans have made in the history of the United States. 2018 THEME: Recognition for the role/impact of an African American in shaping the Liberal Arts industry. The theme of the contest is to help us better know African American Artists that will help our STEM programs go full STEAM ahead! The deadline for submission is February 9, 2018 to your student’s Language Arts Teacher.

The divisions are as follows:

High School 9-12 (HS);

Middle School 6-8 (MS);

Elementary K – 5 (E) (Poster Contest)

CLF will have 3 winners from each division who will receive a $50 gift card. Student winners and their parents will be invited to an awards reception hosted by CLF. One honorary mention from each school/division will be asked to read their essay or present their poster submission. Dinner will be served and community leaders, special guests, fellow students, teachers, school officials, and board members will be in attendance.

Essay (Grades 6-12): 2018 THEME: Recognition for the role/impact of an African American in shaping the Liberal Arts industry.

Contest Rules

At least 250 words, but shall not exceed 500 words

·  Typed and double-spaced

·  Original work only

·  Due on Thursday, February 9th

Scoring Rubric

Comprehension (20 points)

How well does the essay reflect a through comprehension of the essay topic? Does the essay provide supported reasons for the student’s topic selection?

Organization (20 points)

Does the argument/discussion follow a logical and easily understood progression? Does any outside evidence contained in the essay support the essay’s main points?

Conclusions (20 points)

Do the conclusions follow logically from the main body of the essay and reflect what the student has learned from research? How compelling are the conclusions?

Creativity (20 points)

Use of diverse resources, language and style, creative angle?

Writing (20 points)

Correct grammar, spelling, punctuation, sentence structure.

Poster (Elementary ONLY) 2018 THEME: Recognition for the role/impact of an African American in shaping the Liberal Arts industry.

Scoring Rubric will consider the follow requirements:

·  Poster MUST be 18x14 inches

·  Illustrates & supports a significant African American Artist

·  Illustrates the contribution clearly and with artistic energy

·  Is it Colorful? Creative? Innovative? Different? Finished?

·  Poster should have a caption of at least three sentences, but no more than 10 to include who, what, and how the person contributed to shaping history.

·  Poster should mention one NEW thing the student learned doing this contest? (about arts in STEAM, about African American artists, themselves, society, African American history, etc.)

Transfer of Rights: Each applicant and his/her parent or guardian must agree to give all rights to the submitted artwork, including copyright, to the Chesapeake Lighthouse Foundation. This transfer of rights will allow CLF, at a minimum, to reproduce, distribute, and display your artwork. The winner’s submission may be duplicated in various mediums and used to promote Black History Month. This means that when you submit your artwork to participate in this contest, your artwork will become the property of CLF and will not be returned.
