2017 Trek Equipment
For Ma and Pa Couples
Most of the items on this list are also on the list that every participant receives; however, because of the nature of your position, you will bring some things with you that the youth don’t bring. Please make every effort to keep these items confidential and out of sight. For example, you will have a flashlight in your small daypack or fanny pack, something the youth don’t have. It is only to be used for emergencies, such as an injury after dark.
You probably only need one of the following items between each couple:

- A flashlight
- A watch
- A small daypack or fanny pack (you can take turns wearing it - keep the flashlight, medical supplies, watch, etc. in this pack. If you don’t have a daypack, just use some small bag with handles. Full size internal or external frame backpacks are too large and too heavy to be practical.)
- An old pair of leather or heavy canvas gloves (for lifting hot things off the fire.)
- Two old, 14-quart cooking pan (One will be used to cook your cereal, stew, and heat up the chili. It doesn’t have to be old, but if you want to keep the bottom clean, rub it with bar soap before you put it on the fire.) The other will be used to heat up water for cleaning
- A Dutch oven (at least a 12”)
- Charcoal Chimney Starter, regular size, not compact
- Two dish pans or large Tupperware tub to be used for dishes and for mixing bread
- A long-handled spoon
- A long-handled ladle
- Cup to use as approximate measuring cup
- Knife for cutting vegetables
- Long handled tongs for handling briquettes
- 3-4 inches of newspaper for starting fires in chimney
- Leatherman or pliers
- Salt (about 1 cup) & pepper (enough for seasoning) in waterproof containers
- 20 ft. or more of cord or strong twine to be used for shelters (Some twine will be provided.)
- A box of matches
- Extra sanitary supplies for the young women in your “family”
- Four rags for washing dishes and four old dishtowels
- A 1-quart Tupperware container to be used for shaking the cream into butter
- A pointed shovel
- Baking soda to brush teeth with (enough for the whole family)
- Talcum powder
- Wet wipes or baby wipes
- Extra reading material like old Ensigns or New Eras and writing paper
- Dishwashing soap (small bottle)
- Camping candle lantern
- Three or four 12 x 15 Tarp
- First Aid Kit
- Aloe Vera lotion*, calamine lotion*, hydrocortisone lotion*
- bag balm*or petroleum jelly
- Talcum powder
- Bandaging materials: Multi sized Band-Aids
- Small scissors, tweezers
- Moleskin
- Antiseptic wipes
- Neosporin
- Benadryl or Sudafed capsules (25mg)*
- Ace wraps 4”
- Box of tissues
- Extra sunscreen SPF 30+
- Extra bug repellant
* All of the starred items will also be available from the wagon masters
- Cutting board
- Serrated bread knife or large chef knife
- Can opener

2017 Trek Equipment
For All Youth and Ma’s and Pa’s
This list is provided to help you gather the gear you will need to be a successful pioneer. Because of the weight and space limitations of our handcart design and our attempt to create an authentic pioneer experience, you will be limited in the amount of gear you can bring. You will only need the items listed here, please don’t bring anything else.

- 5-gallon bucket w/ lid (line it with one of the plastic garbage bags & come with all your gear inside) No back packs, please.
- 1 warm sleeping bag (it gets cold in the mountains at night)
- 1 rain poncho and/or sheet of plastic (for rainwear and as a ground cloth)
- 1 pair of tennis shoes (an old pair)
- 1 pair of shoes to hike in (Trail running shoes or day hiking shoes are recommended. Unless you have ankle issues, hiking boots are usually too stiff and heavy. Whatever is worn should be completely broken in prior to Trek.)
- 1 tin cup and carabiner
- 1 pie plate and 1 large spoon
- 1 small hand towel and a comb or brush
- 2 sets of underclothing
- 4 pair of sturdy socks, preferably wool
- Leather work gloves
- 1 bandana (the Stake will provide a 2nd bandana)
- 1 toothbrush
- 2 heavy-duty plastic garbage bags
- A pocket knife
- An old blanket (wool, if possible)
- Personal journal and pen or pencil
- An old set of scriptures and a church magazine
- Insect repellent
- Sunscreen (at least SPF 30)
- Chapstick or lip balm (w/ sunscreen)
- 5 band-aids and prescribed medication only

Men Should Bring:
- 2 pair of wool, cotton or canvas pants (no jeans allowed)
- 2 long sleeved shirts (natural fibers preferred such as linen, cotton, light weight flannel)
- 1 warm jacket, it gets cold at night in the mountains, no sweat shirts, please
- old suit coat for Trek Sabbath – optional
- 1 western-style hat (no baseball or army hats allowed)
- 1 pair suspenders
- 1 old tie
Women Should Bring:
- 2 mid-calf length, long-sleeved dresses (or skirt or jumper with long-sleeved blouses)
- 1 or 2 bonnets
- 1 pair knee-length bloomers (can be made out of old pajama bottoms or hospital pants) or yoga pants
- 1 apron
- 1 warm jacket, in gets cold in the mountains at night, no sweatshirts, please
- Shawl for Trek Sabbath – optional
- Feminine hygiene supplies and an extra pair of bloomers
Optional Items:
- Allergy meds for ryegrass and hay – If you are even slightly prone to allergies, think about this.
- A harmonica or other small musical instrument
