2017 State 4-H Livestock Contest and Results

Congratulations and thank you to all of our 2017 Alaska State Livestock Contest participants and volunteers for all season Memorial Day holiday weekend competition in the Tanana district! Held on the UAF campus, Tanana CES Office and in the surrounding area, everyone got a chance to enjoy an interior springtime. Two teams each from Mat Su and Kenai and one team from Tanana participated this year.

The Thursday evening meet and greet included “The Temple Grandin Story” movie, with a chili and ice cream gathering at the CES Office. Friday started right up with our Skillathon, with teams rotating through the quiz and team problems, as well as the “stations” segment. The stations, set up in a Gruening Building classroom, included meat, fleece and hay judging, livestock breed, feed, meat and equipment identification, and a quality assurance worksheet. Teams were given a specified time limit to work on their problem, then present their “solution” to a judge, in adjacent rooms. Teams worked well together with creative, well thought out ideas. After lunch was our Judging Contest field trip around the area and oral reasons at the CES Office. Teams were challenged by a class of Tunis cross ewes, two classes of market goat does, 12 week old gilts and 8 week old barrows, as well as fickle weather. A taco dinner followed.

Saturday morning contests included our public speaking, demonstrations and extemporaneous speaking, back at the Gruening Building on campus. We again had our annual Art & Photography contest with many outstanding entries. The Quiz Bowl followed after lunch, with the five teams battling it out. Double elimination rounds resulted in the final win going again to the KP Wrangler Black team.

The awards banquet was also held in the Fairbanks Food Bank, with a delicious steak feed and blueberry crumble. After the meal, ribbon and trophy awards were presented to our deserving teams and individuals. Almost all scores were higher overall with obvious increases over last years’ scores and often very close, owing to many hours of study by the participants. The Overall Champion Team award was presented the Kenai Peninsula Wranglers Black Team with Gracie and Colton Rankin, Katie Cooper and Elora Reichert. Reserve Champion overall team was the Tanana Teamsters with Kaitlynn and Lilli Rice, Ben Skellie, Wyatt Fosse, Alden Jerome. Third overall was the Mat Su Pioneer Peak 1 team: Kayleena Roberts, Macee & Ryan Eklund, and Atti Jo Tormey. The 4th place team was Pioneer Peak 2 team, with Cutter Tormey, Della Tryon, Tate Sturdivant and Canyon Roberts. Fifth place was the Kenai Peninsula Wranglers Red team with Levi and Ella Rankin, Evelyn and Corbin Reichert. Top Individual Overall winners were Grand Champion Colton Rankin, Reserve Champion Elora Reichert and 3rd Place Gracie Rankin, all from the Kenai Peninsula Wranglers Black Team. This team has the honor of hosting the Traveling Trophy until next years’ contest, hopefully in the Kenai district.

Many thanks again to all for another great statewide contest, to the Tanana district for hosting and providing volunteers to help, judges and animals to evaluate. See you all next year!
