2017 Presidential Debate Assembly

Overview: The next step of our election cycle is the Presidential Debates. Teams will be debating on various policy issues, such as foreign policy, economic policy, immigration, healthcare, and civil rights.

Teams:

1.  Foreign Policy Debate Team

a.  North Korea, Terrorism, Iran Nuclear Deal, Diplomacy, Travel Bans

2.  Economic Policy Debate Team

a.  Taxes, Income Inequality, Campaign Finance Reform (Citizens United case)

3.  Immigration Policy Team

a.  Travel Ban, DACA, Dream Act, The Wall, Syrian Refugees, Birthright Citizenship

4.  Civil Rights/Social Policy Team

a.  NFL & Freedom of Speech, Stop and Frisk, Equal Pay for Women, Affirmative Action

5.  Education/Healthcare Debate Team

a.  College Tuition, Loans, Obamacare vs Trumpcare, Universal Health Care, Social Security

Regions – Pick a location/region for the debate. Tailor your message to how one of these specific regions.

Guiding Questions

1.  How would your ideas appeal to conservative, liberal and moderate voters?

2.  How does your ideas appeal to the region?

3.  What are the causes of the problems we are talking about, and what are the effects/consequences?

4.  Why is your idea/solution going to work?

Part 1 –

Debate Teams

1.  Begin researching your party’s position on the topic given.

2.  Organize information in google doc.

3.  Create a Pros/Cons Pamphlet to be passed out to the audience during the assembly. You will do the research; the debate managers will compile everything together into a pamphlet.

4.  Research your debate topics by writing a 3-page analysis explaining your topic and the position you and your opponents hold.

5.  IF TIME ALLOWS, Create an Opening Statement VIDEO of the Party

a.  Create a 1 to 3-minute video introducing the competitors, debate topics and your party.

Debate Management Team

1.  Assemble the Pros/Cons Pamphlet. Once the teams have created their Pros/Cons, edit and create the pamphlet to be passed out.

2.  Create 2-3 questions to ask the Parties for each of the 5 debate rounds.

3.  Ensure all teachers @ Ivy are on board and up to date with their Advisory’s citizenship test and registration forms.

4.  Coordinate with 8th grade class to make sure all marketing materials are posted correctly and appropriately.

5.  Day of Assembly

a.  Ensure Microphone, Video and Audio is set-up.

b.  Ensure stage and podiums are set-up.

c.  Ensure students are coming to the auditorium quietly and respectfully.

d.  Ensure that all students have the Pros/Cons pamphlet.

e.  Create voting

Republican Platform: Environment

1.  Summary - Summarize in bullet point form what is the Republican position on the environment)

2.  Environment Analysis

a.  Analysis (Explain through Current Events, or any historical evidence why the party takes this position. For example, Republicans would like to encourage market-based solutions to environmental problems not government regulation. Explain through examples we learned in class why your party believes in this. (THURSDAY CURRENT EVENT)

b.  Counter Claims

i. Explain the Democrats view on the environment and why their views are not the best in solving environmental issues. (1 Paragraph)

ii.  Explain the Libertarians view on the environment and why their views are not best in solving environmental issues. (1 Paragraph

c.  Graph Analysis

i. Using a graph, chart or table, defend your position or provide a counter-claim as to why your opponents position is not as strong.

Registering to Vote – and becoming a citizen –

-  Part 1 - November 3rd – 25 Questions, teacher pick the 10 randomly and 6/10 passes.

-  Part 2- Registering to Vote -

-  They can do it the day of if they don’t register or pass the citizenship test.

-  Something treats for people who register in advance.

8th Grade – Register Rock the Vote – Create Ad – Step to Vote – Advertising Campaign to HYPE IT UP! Everyday an anouncment.

-  October 24 is when we need to start running the register to vote campaign an both. Their goal is to get the whole school register. 100% & TEACHERS

-  And some sort of goal tracker that EVERYONE CAN SEE SOMEWHERE

-  % of PEOPLE WHO PASSED THE CITIZENSHIP TEST AND ARE ELIGIBLE.

-  We want to clean power and high standards for car, appliances to stop pollution and fight climate change. Raises taxes on companies so that they do not pollute anymore.

-  As a republican, we disagree because raising taxes will effect smaller business. They aare just starting out, they are hiring people raisies. Make workers harder.

Immigrants

1.  Republican – The US is the best countries and every. They are no threats happening right now. Extremely vetted before entering the country.
