2017 PRACTICE PLAN-BASKETBALL

7-8 Year Olds, 9-10 Year Olds-At this age, kids can do multiple movements, one after the other. Kids should be reinforced to pass, dribble and shoot properly and while on the move. Those techniques should continue to develop, and for those children who have never learned them before, they should pick it up more quickly.

Week 1

Age group Warm Up Lines

Skill: Dribbling

  • Head/Eyes up while dribbling
  • Keeping the ball close & with control
  • Dribbling to and from certain points
  • Using your body to protect the ball from defender

Stations:

  • Dribbling through cones
  • Dribble Knockout-within certain area
  • Dribble forward & pull backs (control)

Skill: Fine Tuning Passing

  • 3 types of passes-bounce, chest, overhead
  • Player to player passing-stationary
  • Pivot foot

Stations:

  • Coach to player passing
  • Sprint to receive a pass (from coach or teammate)
  • Square up for a shot, or pass it back (options)

Week 2

Age group Warm Up Lines

Skill: Precision Passing

  • Hit the target passing-stationary & while moving
  • Moving to catch a pass
  • Player to player passing

Stations:

  • Pass and Cut
  • Accuracy passing-hit stationary cones at different positions
  • Partner passing-moving up and down the court

Skill: Defending

  • 2-3 zone-guarding an area, not a player
  • Defending passing lanes-anticipate the pass
  • Defensive slides & hands up

Stations

  • Zone quick rotations based on offensive passes
  • Stealing off the pass (7-8), anticipate & go for steal (9-10)
  • Defending player with the ball vs. defending passing lanes-shell drill
  • Zig Zags: one player dribbles, other plays defense while moving from cone to cone

Week 3

Age group Warm Up Lines
Skill: Footwork

  • Speed & Agility
  • Hand/Eye coordination
  • Quick moves & changes of direction

Stations:

  • Speed/Agility Ladder
  • Explosive sprints-running to and from certain points
  • Fakes, cuts in and out looking to receive ball

Skill: Form Shooting

  • Correct shooting form: start in and work your way out
  • Bend knees & following through
  • Square up to the basket
  • Catch & Shoot
  • Lay ups (9-10)

Stations:

  • Form shooting from different spots-coach plays defense (7-8) or player plays defense (9-10)
  • Catch & shoot-square up first
  • Dribble, pull back & shoot

Week 4

Age group Warm Up Lines

Skill: Offense

  • Rebound & transition to offense-dribble
  • Transitioning while someone else has the ball (run to position while preparing to receive the ball)-spacing
  • Heads up while dribbling

Stations:

  • Rebound & transition to offense (7-8)
  • Steal the ball & transition to offense (9-10)
  • 3 on 2, 2 on 1
  • Using fakes to change direction

Skill: Fine Tuning Shooting

  • Shot selection
  • Catch & shoot-rapid fire shots
  • Developing the right touch-keep the ball within reach

Stations:

  • Chasing down a moving ball (coach thrown) to take a shot while moving
  • Controlling the ball from a pass or throw to taking a shot
  • Shots off the dribble
  • Long Range Shots

Week 5

Age group Warm Up Lines

Skill: Defending a Shot

  • 7-8: hands straight up to defend shot, 9-10: slide to position-zone OR man to man
  • Defense: guarding off the ball, prep for rebound
  • Spatial Awareness on defense

Stations:

  • Running up to Coach to defend the shot
  • Stopping a breakaway
  • Defending two players at once

Skill: Partner Passing

  • Player to player passing(partners moving up and down court)
  • Player to player passing with a defender
  • Looking for options to pass
  • Timing Passes (pass at correct angle)

Stations:

  • Back & Forth Passing to goal & alternating shots taken
  • Repeat above with defenders added in

Week 6

Age group Warm Up Lines

Skill: Rebounding

  • Offensive rebounding & put backs
  • Defensive rebounding & transitions

Stations:

  • 7-8: Offensive: coach shoots, player rebound & put back
  • 9-10: Offensive: players shoot, rebound & put back
  • 7-8: Defensive: coach shoot, players rebound and transition dribble to offense
  • 9-10: Defensive: player shoot, players rebound and transition dribble to offense

Skill: Ball Handling

  • Hand/eye coordination
  • Skill Development
  • Footwork & Quick Movements

Stations:

  • Two ball dribbling (7-8, 9-10)
  • Tennis Ball dribbling (9-10)
  • Jump Stops
  • Explosive-beat the defender

Week 7

Age group Warm Up Lines

Skill: Precision Shooting

  • Receiving a pass to shoot
  • Shots off the dribble
  • Breakaways (7-8)
  • Full court breakaways (9-10)

Stations:

  • Coach “shoots,” players rebound and put back
  • Breakaway dribbles to shot (7-8)
  • Full court breakaway to lay up (9-10)

Skill: Shooting Competitions

  • Game Like Situation Shooting

Stations:

  • Team Shooting Competition-stationary from a line
  • Team Shooting Competition off the dribble
  • Following your shot/rebound

Week 8

Age group Warm Up Lines

Skill: Dribble, Pass, Shoot

  • Encompassing skills taught in weeks 1-7

Stations:

  • Dribble Relays-Heads & Eyes up
  • Partner Passing Relays
  • Money Ball, Around the World
