2017 PMP - Daily Safety Message
Hydration Safety
Context:
Drink before you get thirsty. By the time you’re thirsty you are already dehydrated.
Hydration Safety:
· Avoid drinks with high caffeine or sugar content.
o Coffee / Tea, above your usual levels of consumption
o Pop
o Energy Drinks
· Levels of acceptable caffeine / sugar intake vary depending on each individual and what they are used to.
· Energy drinks increase risk for several health problems including heart attack and stroke. This is a major concern with the number of young workers onsite for PMP.
· The caffeine content of energy drinks vary, with some containing the equivalent of 14 cans of Coca-Cola.
· Sports Drinks are NOT the same as Energy Drinks.
· Sports Drinks with less than 8% carbohydrates can actually improve absorption of water from the gut. (e.g Sqwincher, Gatorade and Powerade)
o Those with diabetes or with high blood pressure should consult with their physician BEFORE consuming such products.
· When too much sweat is lost, the body does not have enough water left to cool itself.
· Dehydration has also been shown to adversely affect decision-making and cognitive performance, which could be associated with an increased risk of incidents and may contribute to a decline in productivity.
· How much should you drink?
o Trust your kidneys to tell you how much you should drink. The volume and colour of your urine are good indicators of hydration. If you are not passing urine twice per 8 hour shift or your urine is dark in colour you are likely not getting enough fluid.
Water is the preferable choice to rehydrate
