RACE RULES & CONDITIONS

GENERAL:

Each competitor must read the following to ensure the safe running of the event.

  • Competitors must obey all directions and instructions from the Event Manager and volunteers.
  • Standard Triathlon Australia competition rules apply (a copy can be found at
  • It is the responsibility of competitors to be familiar with the course.
  • If you withdraw from the race at any point it is essential you notify the Event Manager or timing team at the finish line so that you can be accounted for.
  • The Event Manager has ultimate and final authority to remove a competitor from the race if the competitor is judged to be incapable of continuing without risk of serious injury to themselves or others.
  • Torsos must be covered during the ride/run legs.
  • All competitors must have their race number marked on their right calf and arm.
  • All competitors must carry breakdown spares for the cycle leg.
  • The course is not closed and not physically controlled so be aware of other users including vehicles, pedestrians and other bike riders. You must heed, give way and communicate your presence to all other road/path users.
  • Injured competitor protocol. If you hurt yourself, you are to stop where you are. The first person that comes across you is also required to stop, render assistance and remain with you if required. The next person that comes across you, if required, will go for help or alternatively use your mobile phone to contact the Race Director or 000. There will be a basic first aid kit with the Race Director at the transition area.
  • Injured other user protocol. If you hurt another user, you are to stop where you are, render assistance and remain with the person if required. The next person that comes across you, if required, will go for help or alternatively use your mobile phone to contact the Race Director or 000. There will be a basic first aid kit with the Race Director at the transition area.
  • Passing protocol. If you need to pass you must clearly communicate your intention by saying ‘passing on the right’. It is the responsibility of the person passing to pass safely.
  • Competitors are responsible for their own equipment. The Transition Area will not be supervised post-race and competitors should remove their bikes from transition as soon as they have finished the race.

GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS:

  • Drink plenty of fluid before, during and after the event.
  • Bikes must be in safe mechanical condition and will be checked prior to the race.
  • Bikes should carry a full bottle of water at the start of the cycle leg.
  • Water stations will be positioned at the finish line, on the sprint & OD run course (cnr Sayonara and Gubinge), and on the OD cycle leg (corner Sands Street).
  • Competitors should carry their own energy gels/drinks if required as only water will be available at the water stations

SWIM LEG:

  • The appropriately coloured swim cap for your race distance must be worn – this will be issued at check in at Leading Edge Computers on Saturday 16 September.
  • Broome Surf Life Saving Club will be providing water safety for the race. Should you encounter difficulties during the swim leg, raise your arm in the air to attract the attention of the water safety patrol.

TRANSITION: (Swim to Bike)

  • At the completion of the Swim Leg competitors must enter transition, put their helmet on their head and secure the helmet straps prior to moving their bike from the Transition Area.
  • A basic first aid kit will be available in the Transition Area if required.
  • If you encounter difficulties during the swim leg, raise your arm to attract the attention of the water safety patrols.

CYCLE LEG:

  • An approved helmet must be worn and fastened at all times.
  • No outside assistance can be rendered.
  • No drafting is permitted, riders must not stay in the 10 metre draft zone for longer than 20 seconds and only when passing another rider.

TRANSITION: (Bike to Run)

  • At the completion of the cycle the bike must be racked in the transition area prior to unfastening the helmet.
  • Marshalls will be present at the Transition Area during the race to provide bike security and supervision
  • Only competitors who are racing should be in the transition area.
  • Team change overs will take place at the Transition Area.
  • A basic first aid kit will be available in the Transition Area.

THE COURSES:

ENTICER DISTANCE (375m/10km/3km approximate distances):

SWIM LEG: The exact course will be confirmed at the race briefing and will take weather conditions at the time into account, but will likely consist of one lap of a marked rectangular course.

RIDE LEG: TWO laps of the following circuit:

  1. Right out of transition area
  2. Right at Surf Club Roundabout (will be traffic controlled) onto Cable Beach Road West
  3. Left at next roundabout onto Gubinge Road
  4. Left at next roundabout (‘Boab Roundabout) onto Fairway Drive
  5. Follow Fairway / Sanctuary all the way back to Surf Club Roundabout
  6. On Lap 1, turn left back onto Cable Beach Road West. On lap 2, go straight across roundabout back into car park and transition area.

RUN LEG: ONE lap of the following circuit:

  1. Out of transition and into car park
  2. Turn right at Surf Club roundabout, cross Cable Beach Road with care, and run straight up Sanctuary Drive past Zeebar and Ray White.
  3. Turn right at Kapang Roundabout and continue down Kapang Drive, crossing over Challenor Drive
  4. Turn right onto Sunset Park footpath (opposite Maritana Rd)
  5. Cross Sayonara Drive with care and continue on Sunset Park footpath
  6. At end of footpath, turn right onto Koolama Avenue. Cross Koolama and proceed down Sanctuary Drive
  7. At Surf Club roundabout, cross Sanctuary Drive and run on path down past Cable Beach Club to the beach access ramp.
  8. Cross ramp with care and proceed on footpath past Zanders and along to finish line at the Surf Club.

SPRINT DISTANCE (750m/20km/5km – approximate distances):

SWIM LEG: The exact course will be confirmed at the race briefing and will take weather conditions at the time into account, but will likely consist of TWO laps of a marked rectangular course.

RIDE LEG: FOUR laps of the following circuit:

  1. Right out of transition area
  2. Right at Surf Club Roundabout (will be traffic controlled) onto Cable Beach Road West
  3. Left at next roundabout onto Gubinge Road
  4. Left at next roundabout (‘Boab Roundabout) onto Fairway Drive
  5. Follow Fairway / Sanctuary all the way back to Surf Club Roundabout
  6. On Laps 1, 2 and 3, turn left back onto Cable Beach Road West. On final lap, go straight across roundabout back into car park and transition area

RUN LEG: ONE lap of the following circuit:

  1. Left out of transition, cross the car park to the footpath.
  2. Cross Cable Beach Road West at roundabout (traffic controlled)
  3. Run on footpath along Cable Beach Road West.
  4. Cross Murray Road with care and proceed on footpath to Gubinge Road roundabout
  5. Run on footpath alongside Gubinge Road to Fairway Drive roundabout.
  6. Turn left at Fairway Drive, then left again onto Sunset Park footpath (through park)
  7. Cross Kapang Drive with care and keep going on footpath through park
  8. Cross Delaware Road and keep on footpath past Maritana Park
  9. Cross Kapang Drive with care onto footpath through park
  10. Cross Sayonara Drive with care and keep on footpath through Sunset Park
  11. Turn right onto Koolama Drive
  12. At the end of Koolama, cross with care and proceed down Sanctuary Road back towards Surf Club
  13. Cross Sanctuary Drive at the Surf Club roundabout (will be traffic controlled), and run on path down past Cable Beach Club to the access ramp.
  14. Cross ramp with care and run on footpath along past Zanders to the finish line at the Surf Club

OLYMPIC DISTANCE (1500m/40km/10km approximate distances):

SWIM LEG: The exact course will be confirmed at the race briefing and will take weather conditions at the time into account, but will likely consist of TWO OR FOUR laps of a marked rectangular course.

RIDE LEG: THREE laps of the following circuit:

  1. Right out of transition area
  2. Right at Surf Club Roundabout (will be traffic controlled) onto Cable Beach Road West
  3. Left at next roundabout onto Gubinge Road
  4. Left at next roundabout (‘Boab Roundabout) onto Fairway Drive
  5. Follow Fairway Drive to the next roundabout
  6. Turn right (giving way to other road users including other competitors on the bike leg) onto Oryx Drive
  7. Follow Oryx/Fairway to junction with Lullfitx Drive
  8. Turn left onto Lullfitz and go all the way to the end of the road
  9. Turn round and then turn left into Sands St
  10. Follow Sands St all the way round back to junction with Lullfitz
  11. Turn right onto Lullfitz (giving way to vehicles) and follow back to Oryx/Fairway Roundabout
  12. Turn right onto Sanctuary Drive and follow road back to Surf Club Roundabout
  13. On laps 1 and 2, turn left back onto Cable Beach Road West and repeat loop
  14. On lap 3, go straight over roundabout back into Surf Club Car Park and transition area.

RUN LEG: TWO laps of the following circuit:

  1. Left out of transition, cross the car park to the footpath
  2. Cross Cable Beach Road West at roundabout (traffic controlled)
  3. Run on footpath along Cable Beach Road West
  4. Cross Murray Road with care and proceed on footpath to Gubinge Road roundabout
  5. Run on footpath alongside Gubinge Road to Fairway Drive roundabout.
  6. Turn left at Fairway Drive, then left again onto Sunset Park footpath (through park)
  7. Cross Kapang Drive with care and keep going on footpath through park
  8. Cross Delaware Road and keep on footpath past Maritana Park
  9. Cross Kapang Drive with care onto footpath through park
  10. Cross Sayonara Drive with care and keep on footpath through Sunset Park
  11. Turn right onto Koolama Drive
  12. At the end of Koolama, cross with care and proceed down Sanctuary Road back towards Surf Club
  13. At the end of lap 1, turn left back onto Cable Beach Road West to commence the 2nd lap.
  14. At the end of lap 2, sross Sanctuary Drive at the Surf Club roundabout (will be traffic controlled), and run on path down past Cable Beach Club to the access ramp.
  15. Cross ramp with care and run on footpath along past Zanders to the finish line at the Surf Club
