Putting Learning to Work Committee for the Learning Experience

March 31, 2000

The meeting was held on Friday, March 31, 2000 at 1:00 pm.

Present: Rebecca Burch, James Coates, Brent Hussin, John Katers, Anne Kok, Karen Lacey, Dan Mitchell, Linda Peacock-Landrum, Denise Scheberle, Patricia Terry

Introductions were made of the committee members present. We also reviewed the calendar of events pertaining the deadlines for the Learning Experience project.

We reviewed the Recommendations our committee was to deal with (X and XI). We also brainstormed how we should interpret the recommendations and formulate them.

We focused on what is currently being done in various departments with regards to internships with the goal of finding a link between what is already being done and the future recommendations. We also searched for a link between our two recommendations in the hopes of combining them. Linda Peacock Landrum will provide each committee member with a copy of a service learning survey that was done two years ago.

We also discussed the importance of more faculty and staff to help supervise and advise the students. There must be clear communication between the students and administration. The student’s perspective was also addressed. Questions were posed as to how the requirements would affect transfer students, as well as students who change their major. All members duly noted the need for flexibility and simplicity in the Learning Experience.

There was some discussion on how to provide each student with professional practice in a workplace environment. There are a limited number of internships available and some confusion on what else can be considered professional practice. The question was also posed at to how make this recommendation appealing the community business- how do we provide an incentive to businesses to provide professional practice to students?

We discussed what is needed as a basis before we can continue with our interpretation of Recommendations X and XI:

- What are the criteria and characteristics for professional learning experiences and citizenship?

- What are the main barriers to moving forward?

- Define and make clear the language of the recommendations

Committee members were asked to answer these questions prior to the next meeting which is to held on Tuesday, April 18, 2000 at 11:15 in RH324 Conference Room.
