What to Consider When Applying to Teach at Aspire-Specialty Teacher

Commitment:

Candidates must be available to work the entire session, Monday through Friday from 8:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Special considerations cannot be made to accommodate other camps, practices or programs whose date/time requirements conflict with Aspire. The program runs from June 15-July 29, 2016. (Aspire is for the Fourth of July.) Attendance at two or three evening events during the summer is also required.

Eligibility:

The Specialty Teacher positions are open to professional educators with 0-2 years of classroom experience and/or current graduate students who are pursuing advanced degrees in Adolescent Psychology, Education, Social Services, Non-profit management, Visual/Performing arts, Business, Health or other related fields. A passion for working with young people, and significant mentoring and leadership experience are preferred qualifications for this position.

Compensation: Stipends begin at $2000

Description of the Specialty Teacher position

Aspire is seeking responsible, creative individuals for the position of Specialty Teacher. There are three Specialty Teacher positions available at Aspire:

Learning Resources Teacher

The Learning Resources Teacher serves as both the program librarian and as a support for academic classes. Primary duties include teaching library and study hall choice periods, providing curricular support to teachers of grades six through eight and teaching Learning Resources classes focused on topics such as study and research skills for the ninth grade.

Wellness Teacher

The Wellness Teacher position is ideal for a graduate student who is focusing their studies on adolescent psychology, health, social-emotional wellness, counseling or related fields. Primary responsibilities include the design and execution of wellness classes for all grade levels, six through nine. The Wellness Teacher will also teach choice periods and participate in the Aspire community as needed.

Technology Teacher

The Technology Teacher position is ideal for a graduate student who is focusing their studies on computer science, information technology, coding or other related fields. Primary responsibilities include the design and execution of a Technology class for all grade levels, six through nine. The Technology Teacher will also teach choice periods and participate in the Aspire community as needed.

  1. Related Responsibilities - Specialty Teachers offer/supervise daily student choice periods and also are involved in the supervision of lunch and other special events.
  1. Faculty Meetings and Events - Specialty Teachers are required to attend Faculty Orientation and Program Evaluation days as these are critical training and team building periods. Attendance at a few special events outside of the school day (Family Night and Closing Ceremony, for example) is also expected. Additionally, Specialty Teachers attend daily staff meetings regarding teaching, program details, and student progress throughout the summer.

Responsibilities of the Specialty Teacher position

You will be responsible for:

  • Working independently and collaboratively to develop and implement curriculum and programming specific to the role.
  • Selecting appropriate materials to support the curriculum
  • Building community by setting the overall tone of the program for students
  • Communicating program expectations and consequences to students

Qualifications for the Specialty Teacher position

The Ideal candidate will have:

  • Teaching and/or youth development experience
  • Familiarity with Aspire or other innovative middle school programming
  • Strong leadership, problem solving, and management skills
  • Ability to work on a team and support the overall mission of the program
  • The ability to take both direction and initiative; a self-starter who is a strong team player.
  • Understanding of the challenges facing high school girls with limited opportunities
  • Strong organizational, public speaking, writing and computer skills
  • Creativity and energy to work in a flexible and fast-paced environment
  • Insightful approach to community issues and the ability to identify multiple solutions;

  1. Specialty classes are designed to promote skill building in the areas of social-emotional learning and information literacy. Specialty teachers work across all grade levels, 6-9, and plan curriculum for classes for all Aspire students.
