Program Description

The School of Business Mentor Program provides students with an invaluable opportunity for personal and professional development through the support of a mentor.

The students who are selected for the Mentor Program will partner and work directly with a mentor, who has a background in your occupational/career area(s) of interest. Mentors provide guidance and support to help students to: enhance your knowledge and skills; build your self-confidence; explore and better define your career goals and options; and, build your professional network.

Each student (aka mentee) is assigned to one mentor, who is located within reasonable proximity of your regional area.

Student Eligibility Requirements

Students who would like to participate in the Mentor Program must meet the following requirements:

§ Be a School of Business student entering the final year of your program

§ Undergraduates must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 and graduate students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0.

§ Thoroughly complete and submit all Application Requirements by deadline.

§ Fully commit to all Participation Requirements.

Student Participation Requirements

All students who would like to participate in the Mentor Program are required to:

§ Thoroughly complete and submit the Student Application Form, current Resume, a Letter of Interest, and all required documentation by August 18, 2017.

§ Participate in an informational webinar and a phone interview with the Mentor Program committee.

§ Attend the Mentor Program Orientation & Mixer on October 14, 2017 at the Redlands campus in the Casa Loma Room.

§ Plan and meet with your assigned mentor in-person once per month at a minimum for the duration of the seven-month program.

§ Attend a minimum of one mentor networking event.

§ Utilize mentoring resources and support available.

§ Provide informal updates on your progress.

§ Attend the Mentor Program Closing Ceremony on June 2, 2018 at the Redlands campus in the Orton Center.

Part 2: A Letter of Interest to include a Personal and Professional Summary of Goals

Students are required to submit a written Letter of Interest to include a detailed personal and professional summary addressing the following:

§ Your reason(s) for pursuing business degree as it relates to your career goals

§ Your reason(s) for applying for the Mentor Program

§ Describe your career plans/goals

§ Explain your goals for this mentoring experience. What do you hope to gain or accomplish?

§ Explain why you should be selected for this program.

Part 3: Student Participation Contract (page 4)

Part 4: Two Professional Letters of Recommendation

Students must obtain two written letters of recommendation from two faculty members or a faculty member and a work supervisor or colleague. Please ask individuals providing the recommendation to submit it electronically and include the following:

§ Reason(s) instructor, supervisor, and/or colleague believes you are a good candidate for the Mentor Program

§ Describe observations and experiences with you in the classroom or workplace in the following areas: attendance, participation, communication skills, professionalism, leadership ability, teamwork, and dependability

Part 5: DISC Personality Test

The Student Application Form, Personal and Professional Summary, and all required documents are due by August 18, 2017. For consideration, please submit all materials to Student Services at by the application deadline. All eligible applicants will be contacted by mid to late September to attend a required informational webinar and to schedule a phone interview. Students will be notified of their acceptance status by early to mid-September.

Students selected to participate in the Mentor Program must attend the Mentor Program Orientation & Mixer (Saturday, October 14, 2017), meet with assigned mentor in-person once per month at a minimum for the duration of the seven-month program, attend a minimum of one mentor networking event, and attend the Mentor Closing Ceremony (Saturday, June 2, 2018). All mentees will receive an orientation at the Orientation and Mixer in October. Following the orientation, mentees will be introduced to their assigned mentor.

Student Participation Contract

By signing below, I understand that as a participant in the Mentor Program, I must actively participate and commit to all of the following events and activities:

§ Attend and actively participate in the mandatory Mentor Program Orientation & Mixer - scheduled on Saturday, October 14, 2017, from 9:15 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. at the Casa Loma Room, Redlands Campus.

§ Plan, schedule, and attend all in-person mandatory meetings with my mentor (once per month at a minimum) from October 2017 to May 2018.

§ In addition to monthly meetings, follow through with all scheduled activities and communication (emails, calls, etc.) with my mentor throughout the seven-month program.

§ Attend a minimum of one mentor networking event.

§ Provide informal updates on my progress with mentor, and notify the program coordinators immediately if there are any extenuating circumstances that might prevent me from meeting with my mentor or may delay my follow through with any activities

§ Utilize mentoring resources and support available.

§ Notify the Student Services staff if I am experiencing difficulty contacting or working with my mentor.

§ If schedule permits, actively participate in the scheduled Regional Alumni Chapter Mixer events and Employer Site Visits.

§ Attend and actively participate in the mandatory Mentor Program Closing Ceremony - scheduled on Saturday, June 2, 2018 from 9:15 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. in the Orton Center, Redlands Campus.

I acknowledge and understand that as a Mentee, I must fulfill the duties and responsibilities outlined in this contract. Failing to comply, could result in my dismissal from the Mentor Program and may risk my eligibility for participation in other School of Business programs and activities.
