2016 - VEGETABLE INFORMATION

ASPARAGUS

Martha Washington: 730 days. Plant in full sun to part shade. Bare roots can be planted as soon as they arrive in spring. In two years, you’ll have a light crop and a regular crop thereafter.

BROCCOLI

Premium Crop: 58 days. AAS winner. Large, firm head with small, smooth fine-textured,

beads and tender stems. Excellent long holding quality.

BRUSSELS SPROUTS

Jade E Cross Hybrid: 90 days. An improvement on Jade E Cross. Sprouts are larger and easier

to harvest. Plants slightly taller. Large, firm, blue green sprouts of

excellent quality closely set around stems. Freezes well.

CABBAGE

Big Flat Head: 80-85 days. A great choice for coleslaws, this cabbage has a flat form and big, mild-tasting leaves.

Mixed: A variety of cabbages (Stone head, Blue Vantage – 67-80 days; Rio Verde

Hybrid (85 days) that provide maturing cabbage throughout the season.

Ruby Perfection: 65 days. Red, solid, ball-shaped heads with short core. Sweet flavor, holds color when cooking. Slow to burst. Heads to 5 lbs.

Stonehead: 50 days. Very early producer of 3 ½ lb nearly round heads. Uniformly

short stemmed with extremely solid interior. Excellent holding ability

for an early hybrid. Can be used for kraut.

CAULIFLOWER

Self Blanche: 68 days. Pure white, well-shaped heads of fine texture when grown in

cool weather. May need tying in warm weather.

Snow Crown: 50 days. Early and vigorous growing snowball type head is well rounded. Very smooth pure white weighing about 2 lbs and of excellent quality.

CELERY

Tango: 85 days. So improved over older varieties that it’s almost an entirely new plant. Tango Hybrid delivers yields and flavor like you’ve never seen before! The stalks are wonderfully crunchy and sweet, springing up from exceptionally vigorous, robust plants.

COLLARDS

Georgia: 65 days. Tender, blue-green leaves that will withstand light frost. The mild cabbage-like flavor actually improves with a light frost. Plant in spring and again in late summer for a fall to winter harvest. Avoid areas where any of the cabbage family members were grown the previous year.


CUCUMBERS

Burpee Hybrid: 55 days. Straight green fruits, 8 ½” x 2 ½”. Rounded at the ends, with medium seed cavity and crispy flesh. Plant more than one plant for a good fruit set.

Burpless #26 Hybrid: 70 days. Very compact, productive Japanese type cucumber with fruit 9-10” long and 1 ¾” – 2 ½” diameter. Stake for best results.

Fanfare: 63 days. Great taste, compact plants, high yields, extended harvest,

disease resistant. Straight 8” – 9” cucumbers are dark green and very uniform. AAS winner.

Bush Crop: 62 days. Uniform, 9” dark green fruits are produced on compact plants. Good for trellis or fence growing. Can be used fresh or for pickling.

EGGPLANT

Little Fingers: 68 days. Produces abundance of slim, long, dark purple 6 to 8 inch fruits. Plant 3-4 weeks after last frost date. Warmer ground temperature promotes faster growth. Harvest when they are no longer than your little finger.

Satin Moon: 50 days. Improved version of Satin Beauty. Glossy, oval fruit that grows up to 8 inches. Because of its very early maturity, it is well-suited to growing in northern climates as well as warmer areas.

KALE - VEGETATIVE

KOHLRABI

Walla Walla (Long day) An extremely mild, very large flattened bulb, yellow onion

that will please any onion lover. Excellent raw or cooked. However,

this is not a storage onion.

White Bermuda: An old gardening favorite! Great for bunching or for eating raw. They are extremely mild. Thick, flat bulbs. They do not store well.

White Sweet Spanish: White skinned, medium-large, mild-flavored bulb. Round and firm. Good

keeper.

Yellow Sweet Spanish: Extra large, light-brown skinned bulbs. White flesh. Mild flavor. Best

PEPPERS

California Golden Wonder: 67-73 days. Smooth, blocky and blunt-ended 5” x 4” fruits are thick-walled, very sweet and mild. Mature from light-green to golden-yellow.

Carmen: 75 days. Tapered 6 in fruit is noticeably sweet in comparison to other in its

Class. Early, horn-style fruits turn red at maturity. 2006 AAS Winner.

Cute Stuff Red: 56 days. Green/red apple-shaped mini-bell variety yields up to 3 times more than other peppers. Great for eating fresh or stuffing.

Giant Marconi 72 days. AAS Winner. A heavy-yielding variety that produces 6’-8’

green fruits that mature to a bright red, are about 3’ in diameter at the

top and are 3-lobed. A thin skinned variety that can be used in salads,

roasted on the grill, or pan-fried with tomatoes and eggplant.

Green Lady Bell: 71 days. The rich green fruit that ripen red have a uniform deep bell shape with 3-4 lobes and medium-thick walls. Sweet and very productive.

Gypsy: 65 days. Yellow fruits are long and pendulous. Sweet and very productive.

Habanero: 95 days. Tapered, pale-green fruits have a wrinkled skin and turn orange at

maturity. 50 times hotter than Jalapeno - 200,000 to 300,000 Scovilles.

Hot Cayenne Long Red Thin: 75 days. Very hot fruits, 5” long and 0.5” thick. Use fresh or dry for winter use.

Jalapeno: 72 days. Fruits are bright red with pungent flesh.

Mariachi: 65 days. 2006 AAS Winner. Improved cone-shaped, 3-4 in fruit ideally suited for gardens. A palatable pepper that is not too hot to eat. 500-600 Scovilles.

Nikita Orange: 75-70 days. Nicely-branched plants produce early and prolifically. Blocky blond beauty holds its crispness and shape when cooked. Loaded with bold, bright flavor and crispness.

Red Bull: 70-75 days. Extra-large, blocky bell pepper is very thick-walled and capable of becoming just huge. Begins as dark green and ripens to a candy apple red, the stage when the fruit is very sweet and most nutritious.

Red Serrano: 75 days. Very pungent fruit, 2 ¼” in diameter. Slim, club-shaped green

peppers with medium-thin walls maturing to a bright red. Plants 30” tall.

Superchile: 75 days. Produces loads of medium-sized, 2-3” long, blunt-ended peppers that are excellent for hot sauce, drying and roasting.

Sweet Banana: 70 days. 5 ½” x ½” tapered yellow fruits with a thin wall. Peppers are used mostly for pickling.

Tiburon – Ancho/Poblano: 68-88 days. Heart shaped, thinner walled fruits are moderately pungent and turn from black-green to red. 88 days for red ripe.

POTATOES - SEED

Gold Russet: Midseason potato with large, strong vines and upright growth. Excellent flavor and extremely white flesh before and after cooking. An excellent dry land potato. Resistant to hollow heart, scab and black spot bruising.

Kennebec: Champion late potato! Thin skinned, so young tubers are tasty for creaming. Good for boiling, mashing and baking too – smooth, with shallow eyes. Resistant to early and late blight, mosaic virus. Stores well.

Red Norland: Harvest lots of No. 1 tubers early in the season! Shallow-eyed, nicely rounded potatoes are crisp, delicious and easy to peel. Scab tolerant.

Red Pontiac: Top-notch mashing potato! Produces solid tubers with thin red skin, shallow

eyes and crisp white flesh. Midseason to late maturity. A good keeper – has

long-lasting quality. Does extremely well in heavy soils.

Yukon Gold: Produces a big, early, great-tasting crop of yellow-fleshed spuds for baking or mashing. Delicious, rich flavor – you’ll swear it’s already been buttered! Gold skin is shallow-eyed. Sprout resistant, super for storage.

Acorn Table Ace: 75 days. Glossy dark green fruits are 6” long and 5” across. Develop hard

outer shell. Great keeper, small seed cavity, thick flesh.

Buttercup Sweet Mama: 95 days. AAS award winning buttercup type. Turban shaped, dark, grey-

green fruits. Flesh is deep gold and very sweet. Short, semi-vine habit.

Butternut Waltham Hybrid: 80 days. Somewhat compact vines produce high quality fruits that average
