Quarter three marked the summer holiday period for all students as well as the PNE beneficiaries. Two summer camp programs were organized for youths at the Ovie Brume Foundation Youth Development Centre. The summer camp seeks to productively engage the students during the summer holiday.

Bridging the Gap Summer Camp was targeted at Junior and Senior Secondary School student at the Foundation. The camp featured training in Computer, Make Up, Catering, Tie and dye, Ankara accessories and Sporting activities. The program, which was specifically designed to teach entrepreneurial skills is aimed at ensuring the students have skills which can provide income especially in the current economic situation of the country. With such skills, they can generate income to sponsor them through school. The second category, which was targeted at primary school pupils seeks to provide the pupils the opportunity to identify their innate skills. This will enable the pupils nurture and develop such skills alongside their academic pursuits. The camp featured training in Photography, Arts, Coding and Catering. The summer camps held for 2 weeks with 113 participants among whom were the PNE beneficiaries.

Towards the end of the third quarter, the PNE beneficiaries were provided educational support. They were provided with exercise books and school bags in preparation for the new academic session. Some of the pupils who have submitted their list of textbooks for the session have since been provided with the textbooks.

Follow up visit to the schools and class teachers are scheduled to hold in the next quarter. This is to intimate their respective teachers with the PNE scheme so as to facilitate monitoring sessions for the beneficiaries as well as ensure adequate follow up by the teachers as well.

Limitations

a.  PNE beneficiaries are increasingly having accommodation challenges due to recent urban development activities within the state and this has resulted in relocation by some of the beneficiaries.

b.  Delay in issuing end of term report cards made it impossible to identify the beneficiaries’ weaknesses so as to work on them during the summer break.

c.  There is need to provide transport support to facilitate some of the beneficiaries’ attendance in school. We have been unable to provide this due to limited resources.

d.  Beneficiaries’ needs are often overwhelming at the beginning of new academic sessions.

e.  The numbers of deserving students for the scholarship scheme keeps increasing by the day as the country’s economic situation worsens, hence the need for more resources to enroll more beneficiaries.

Recommendation

a.  Provision of adequate resources to provide the necessary services required by the current beneficiaries as well as accommodate more students in the scheme.
