Note: To be considered for any of these awards, a candidate must be a professional member of the Vermont Principals' Association and must have practiced as a school leader for five years or more. To receive an award by a national organization (NASSP or NAESP), the school leader must be a member of that national organization, or, if selected, be willing to join immediately. The selection criteria include the Wallace Foundation “effective school leader” criteria plus Schools of Opportunity Criteria. (Detains at vpaonline.org)

Effective leaders are leaders of schools that are continually improving. Selection criteria are based on the Wallace criteria as well as on a school’s documented success in implementing practices that distinguish the school as committed to closing opportunity gaps, as set forth in the book Closing the Opportunity Gap.

The Wallace Foundation criteria for effective leaders should be your guide: Does your nominee: shape a vision of academic success for all students, create a climate hospitable for education, cultivate leadership in others, improve instruction and managing people, data and processes to foster school improvement. Beginning in 2015-16, the selection criteria will also be based on a school’s documented success in implementing practices that distinguish the school as committed to closing opportunity gaps, as set forth in the Closing the Opportunity Gap(see vpaonline.org for details)Comment with specific examples in on your nominee’s ability to do some of the following: create and maintain a healthy school climate; broaden and enrich the school curriculum; provide more and better learning time during the school year and summer; end disparities in learning opportunities created by tracking and ability grouping; encourage the use of a variety of assessments designed to respond to student needs; reassess student discipline policies; support teachers as professionals; provide adequate resources for a safe and well-maintained school environment; address key health issues; build on the strengths of language minority students to correctly identify their needs; expand access to libraries and to the internet while using technology wisely.

The 15 member VPA Executive Council, assisted by previous award winners comprise the selection committee. It reserves the right to call references and to ask for additional information and documentation. If a nominee is selected for a national award, there is a follow-up nomination packet that s/he must complete by early May.
