Parent Orientation Meeting

  1. Program Criteria
  • Multiple criteria for invitation: previous year test score, current running record reading level, math benchmark assessments, current math and literacy grades, work habits/level of independent work, attendance

*Heaviest weight was on literacy NJ ASK score

  • Grouping by need and level in the classes

III. Curriculum (see handouts in packet for specific skills covered)

Language Arts Literacy

  • Focus on reading responses to fiction and nonfiction, when reading appropriately leveled books
  • Pre-Assessmentand Post-Assessment will be in reading responses to a Read Aloud, leveled on a rubric
  • ReadingPlus (15-20 mins per day)

Mathematics

  • Grade 7: key skills 6th gr, pre-teaching key skills 7th grade
  • Grade 8: key skills 7th gr, pre-teaching key skills 8th grade
  • Pre-assessment 1st day, and post-assessment during final week
  • iReady (1-2 days per week)

IV. Methods of Instruction

  • Workshop model with mini-lessons
  • Small group instruction
  • One-on-one conferencing
  • Collaborative and independent work

V. Supplies

  • Most supplies will be provided to the students
  • Students should at least have the following: pen, pencil, and a notebook (we have ordered notebooks and folders, but they may not come on time)
  • Students may bring summer reading novels and use them for independent reading or for recreational reading during breaks

VI.Logistics

  • Transportation: Parents can choose their method of transportation

OPTION A: Parents bring studentsdirectly to FHS at 7:50am and pick up between 10:50-11:00am. Exact location will be announced via phone blast.

OPTION B: Parents drop off students at SGS between 7:30-7:45am, and district busses will transport the students from SGS to FHS. At dismissal, busses will bring the students back to SGS. Parents will pick up their children between 11:00-11:10am from SGS.

  • If someone other than a parent is picking up the student on any given day, the student must bring a note.
  • Daily Schedule: 80 minute Math / 80 minute LAL
  • Students will receive a snack at the end of their first class. Although we will provide snacks, you may want to send your child with additional small snacks daily, but not with a whole lunch.
  • Day 1 and Day 16 schedule

- Day 1: Welcome by Mr. Barksdale, thenstudents go to classes

- Day 16: Short Museum Walkin FHS Cafeteria at 10AM, followed by a treat

  • Attendance: When possible, please let us know in advance if your child will be absentso we can prepare the assignments. Email the coordinator: Maha Ghanem,
  • Nurse is available daily with medical emergencies
  1. Discipline

- Behavior contract will be sent home on the first day

- Incentive program will be in place for motivation

- Consequences will occur if there are repeated offenses

  • Please complete the School Staff-Parent/Guardian Compact
  • Indicate which transportation option you will choose by writing A or B at the bottom of the form
  • Before you leave tonight’s meeting, please check that you have done the following:
  1. Signed into the meeting
  2. Provide a phone number to reach you in case of an emergency
  3. Checked your email address or provided a correct one
  4. Completed the registration form
  • On the first day of classes, the coordinator will greet the students and provide them each with a schedule. Students will be escorted to their rooms.
