2015 St. Finn Barr Middle School Science Fair

Project Guidelines

All middle school students will be participating in the 2015 St. Finn Barr Middle School Science Fair. Note: 8th grade students have the option of participating in the St. Finn Barr Science Museum instead of the Science Fair. See attached Science Museum Project Option. Selected winners from St. Finn Barr’s Science Fair will have the exciting opportunity to enter the San Francisco Science Fair hosted by The Randall Museum in February of 2015 (see timeline).

During the next month, you will be designing a science fair project that uses the many methods of scientists to solve a problem. Participation in the school’s science fair is an important part of your education. The benefits of completing this project are numerous, as this process will help students develop skills in writing, oral presentation, experimentation, creative thinking and problem solving.

Attached you will find a Project Timeline and the Randall Museum Student’s Guide to the San Francisco Science Fair. This student guide gives detailed instructions on how to complete this project and report. Since the science project is a large endeavor, students are being asked to turn in periodic assignments related to their project for student and teacher feedback. The Project Timeline has been attached to help you keep track of the assignments.

In addition to excellent resources available at the public library, I have included URL’s for a few websites that will help you research topics and testable questions.

It is important that you monitor your progress throughout this process. Parent support and encouragement are very helpful but remember that this is your project. It is critical that you come up with your own problem, hypothesis and design of your experiment. Additional advising from parents, teachers or others is fine, but you must do your own work and appropriately cite any help received by others. Copying any other person’s work and calling it your own is plagiarism.

Please sign and return this form by Friday, November 21.
