BOOKS
N301 & N307P: Message from instructor Perry Gee ( )
Students, you do not need to go out and purchase an informatics text book. Find one from a library, find a used one online, borrow one from a friend, contact me I must have at least 10 and I can refer for you. Check out the Healthcare Information Management Systems Society (HIMSS) or the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) or American Nursing Informatics Association (ANIA) or the Journal of Medical Internet Research (JMIR) websites, they may have references you can use. I will occasionally post stuff and I literally have over 2000 PDF's in my personal literature library on almost any topic in the field of Health Informatics....just ask me and I can help you with resources. Here is my required text section from the Syllabus:
Required Reading/Textbooks Needed: Use of any recent (within 5 years) books or journal articles on Informatics that may be needed to assist you with completion of the Informatics Assignments.(ask faculty if you need help)
Publication manual of the American Psychological Association (6th ed.) (2010). Washington, DC: Author. (ISBN: 978-1-4338-0561-5)
This is a mandatory text that will be used throughout the program. (cheap on Amazon....as a student consider joining Amazon prime, you get free 2-day shipping and other perks)...I have three daughters and a wife in college right now, I am not endorsing Amazon but the Prime service has been very handy for us as a family.
RELS 332-Instructor: Tom Parker
There is no orientation for this course. It is one of the Upper Division GE courses that is not required for those of you who already have a Bachelor’s degree. Here is a message from Professor Parker:
This is Tom Parker getting in touch regarding the Summer Session of RELS 332 for Nursing Students. The session has been set up to run from June 1 through July 9, which is a 6 week session. It's pretty reading intensive and I usually forward the required booklist to the Nursing School so they can let students know ahead of time what books will be required. I thought I'd list them for you so that the list can be distributed to students once they're enrolled.
1. J.M. Thompson, Justice & Peace, Orbis Books (any edition will do but I'm using the 2nd edition), ISBN: 1-57075-461-6.
2. Izzeldin Abuelaish, I Shall Not Hate: A Gaza Doctor's Journey on the Road to Peace & Human Dignity, Walker & Company, ISBN: 978-0-80277949-6.
3. Tracy Kidder, Mountains Beyond Mountains: The Quest of Dr. Paul Farmer, A Man Who Would Cure the World, Random House, ISBN: 0-8129-7301-1.
All of these are in paperback, and there's a possibility of used copies online. Since we'll be diving into things right away in a 6 week session, it would help the students out to have these books when the session begins. If they order them after the session begins, and it takes a week or so to get the books, they'll be seriously behind and may have difficulty catching up.
I'll also place an order at the A.S. Bookstore so they should be available there when the session begins. All other readings and videos for the class are provided online.
