I am pleased to nominate the following candidate for the (check one):

2015 Donald E. Pizzini Outstanding Achievement Award

Awarded to a Montana Sanitarian who has contributed for several years to the field of environmental health and was a member in good standing with MEHA for the period referred to, but may or may not be a current member.

In 1968, Donald E. Pizzini went to work for the Cascade City-County Health Department where he was responsible for creating the Cascade County Pesticide Program, Solid Waste District, and the Air Pollution Control Program. Shortly after, he was appointed as the County Commissioners first Administrative Assistant. In 1973, Don was appointed as the first non-physician Health Officer in Montana and served in that capacity until 1989. During this same time, he was also Administrator of the Cascade County Nursing Home. In 1989, he was appointed by Governor Stan Stephens as the first non-physician Director for the Montana Department of Health and Environmental Sciences (DHES). After he left the State, DHES was broken up into DEQ and DPHHS. In 1994, he worked as Chief of the Superfund Program with the Environmental Protection Agency where he was instrumental in the creation of the Old Works Golf Course as a remediation method for the ASARCO Old Works Smelter project in Anaconda.

2015 William G. Walter Outstanding Sanitarian Award

Awarded to a MEHA member who has shown outstanding job performance in the past year.

Dr. William G. Walter is one of the founding members of the Montana Environmental Health Association. Together with Vern Sloulin, planning and conduct of MEHA educational conferences was carried out by Bill. For much of his career, Bill worked as a Professor of Microbiology at MSU-Bozeman. Bill served as President of the National Environmental Health Association in 1962, has served on numerous committees, and was active with the NEHA journal as editor. In 1972, Bill was awarded the Mangold Award, NEHA’s highest honor that recognizes the outstanding contributions that environmental health professionals make to public health and safety. In 1985, Dr. Walter also received the Walter F. Snyder award from NEHA and NSF International for his outstanding accomplishments and attainment in environmental quality. Bill was instrumental to the progress of Sanitarians in Montana and maintained an active interest in the profession up until his death.

2015 Vernon E. Sloulin, R.S., Rookie of the Year Award

Awarded to a MEHA member who is new to the field of environmental health having less than eighteen months of service in the field as of July 1, 2015, and is currently a registered Sanitarian.

Vernon E. Sloulin served as Chief of the Food and Consumer Safety Bureau of the Department of Montana Health and Human Services for much of his career. Together with William G. Walter, planning and conduct of MEHA educational conferences was carried out by Vern. During his 33 years involvement in Environmental Health, Vern served on several committees within the National Environmental Health Association and also served as Regional Vice-President. Vern received the prestigious Mangold Award in 1982, NEHA’s highest honor that recognizes the outstanding contributions that environmental health professionals make to public health and safety.

2015 Excellence Award

Awarded to a MEHA member for making a notable and important contribution to the field of environmental health through excellence of leadership and motivational skills.

2015 Distinguished Service Award

Awarded to an individual or organization outside of MEHA who has made an outstanding contribution to the field of environmental health in Montana.

2015 Certificate of Recognition

Awarded to any individual or organization deserving of recognition for a special achievement in environmental health or special effort that promotes or supports the work of environmental health.
