Three-Hour Workshops
Beginning Knitting

Description: Learn to knit - whether you are right or left-handed! Beginning skills taught will
include cast on, knit and purl stitches, bind off. Students will also be introduced to reading
patterns both written and in diagram. We will begin a sampler of various stitches, and if time allows, complete it!
Make It / Take It
Skill Level: No experience required.
Kit fee - $15. Includes knitting needles, yarn and written instructions.
Instructor: Jan Nosse
Jan has been knitting since 1969 and spinning her own wool and camelid yarns since 1984. Jan spends a great deal of time volunteering at the Milwaukee Zoo where she obtains the
camelid hair for spinning and knitting.
Latvian Mitten Cuff Techniques

Description: This is a "hand on" class where students will learn to knit an ornate Latvian
mitten cuff. The cuff begins with a scalloped edge that can be worked in one or two colors.
The cuff is knit in an overall pattern with most rows containing two colors. A Latvian braid in 2 or 3 colors is also featured. Upon completing the cuff, Sandy will lead a discussion on how to
finish the rest of the mitten, including selection of an overall pattern and fitting it into the mitten,
working the thumb, and the decreases used for the tip of the mitten and the thumb tip.
Make It / Take It
Skill Level: Intermediate. Student must have 2 color knitting experience and know how to knit
with double pointed needles.
No kit
Supplies List: Sport weight yarn in 4 colors: light color or white; a dark color; a color of medium value; and an accent color (something eye catching). (Naturespun works great.) A set of 5 double point needles, size 2. A magnetic board for tracking pattern is helpful. Also scissors, a darning needle, and other basic knitting tools you use.

Sandy De Master is returning in 2015 by popular demand! Sandy has taught classes on Latvian and Estonian mittens throughout the US and has travelled to both of these countries to study knitting techniques. She teaches regularly at Sievers School of Fiber Arts, Washington Island, Wisconsin.
Proddy, Poked or Pegged Rug

Description: The original prodded mats were made from good sections of old worn out
clothes. Short strips of fabric were poked or pulled through some sort of backing. This was
repeated until a shag-like carpet was made. Today we use new hand-dyed wool and a
linen backing. You will be making a mat approximately 9" x 11"

Supplies list: Fabric scissors
Instructor: Joyce Krueger has been sewing and doing some type of needlework since
childhood. As an adult, working with wool is her passion - using wool in prodded mats, rug
hooking, braiding, fabric flowers, knitting and embroidered wall hangings. Joyce is known
as an expert on rug hooking and has won many awards statewide and nationally.
Rug Braiding

Description: Learn the basic techniques for rug braiding and create a trivet 8 to 10 inches in diameter.
Make It / Take It
Skill Level: Beginner - no experience required
Kit fee - $35. Includes Braidkin for lacing, Vari-folders for braiding, tapestry needle, wool.
Supplies list: Needle-nose plier (optional)
Instructor: Sandy Kub
Sandy Kub has been braiding rugs for many years. Sandy enjoys creating rugs and runners
for the floor as well as adding fancy braided borders to her hooked pieces. In 2014, she demonstrated rug braiding at Fall UDay. This year you have the opportunity to practice and take home your own braided piece.
Scrap Wool Pin Cushion

Description: Learn to make easy hand and machine stitched scrap pin cushions. Terri will show you how to make a simple log cabin pattern or create one of your very own using scrap pieces of high quality wool. Terri will demonstrate on her machine how to use Lana thread and decorative stitches. Or, learn how to use hand embroidery stitches to make a fast and fun pin cushion.

Skill Level: Basic hand and machine sewing experience
Kit fee - $10. Includes scraps cut to size, stuffing and thread

Instructor: Terri Sankovitz
Terri Sankovitz has been sewing since she was thirteen years old. Her grandmother, Mary Mathews, taught her the fundamentals of hand piecing quilts at an early age. Terri has been active in the quilting community as a professional since the late 1980’s. She is an accomplished long arm quilter and quilt instructor. Terri was instrumental in the Museum building project.
Sheep Silk Punch Needle

Description: Make and take a fall inspired punch needle pin made with a wool and silk
thread blend, called 'sheep silk'. Learn the ancient craft of Punch Needle and create
your own pin from a choice of original designs by Nancee Ariagno. (Black cats or laughing
pumpkins)

Skill level: No experience required.
Kit fee - $15. Includes pattern, fabric, thread, pin clasp, hoop.
Supplies list: Small scissors, crewel needle. Bring your own Punch Needle – or purchase a #3 Bernadine from Nancee for $20, the day of the class.
Instructor: Nancee Ariagno
Nancee Ariagno's studio, The Cooperage, is located in the WMQFA Farmhouse Gallery,
where the class will be held. Nancee's work can be found in the museum gift shop, at her Etsy
Shop (called the Cooper's Cottage) and at various art venues around the area. Nancee is
a member of the Cedarburg Artists Guild.
The Next Step in Wool Appliqué
#907W
Description: Learn wool appliqué "my way". There are many styles of wool appliqué today -
from primitive to heavily embellished. Lynn Schmitt's style falls somewhere in between.
This class will teach you how to build beautiful wool hand appliquéd projects with truly an
invisible stitched appearance. New techniques for sharper images, easier layering, and an
elevated (almost trapunto) appearance in the final project. The workshop project will focus
on the rich color and textures of fall and be highlighted with the use of mixed medium
textiles and beaded embellishment.
Make It / Take It
Skill level: Some comfort with handwork.
Kit fee - $48. Includes pattern, hand dyed wool, wool thread, textured silk matkas
background fabric, surface embellishments.
Supplies list: Typical sewing notions, including Chenille sewing needles size 20-24,
freezer paper, sharp fabric scissors, and paper scissors.

Lynn Schmitt has worked in a design capacity throughout her professional career. With a BFA in Interior Design and experience in commercial interiors for over 30 years, Lynn is now owner of A Different Box of Crayonsl Through her business, Lynn designs patterns and kits for the adventurous quilter using new techniques and Eclectics (mixed medium textiles such as silk matka, raw silk, linen, woven wools, home decor fabric), illustrating how quilters of all ages can experience a new "box of crayons" to create with!
