This report reflects the findings for MACAASA for the third quarter of the 2015-2016 programs.

Goals and Objectives

Goal / Objectives
Goal 1: Increase perception of harm of alcohol use for minor-aged community members / 1.1 By June 30, 2016 youth grades 5-12 will increase their perception of harm of underage drinking by 2% compared to FY14 results using the 2015-16 ADHS Core Instrument for Adolescents - Pre-Post as reported by youth.

Goal 2: Increase marijuana perception of harm / 2.1 By June 30, 2016 youth grades 6-12 will increase their perception of harm of marijuana use by 2% compared to FY14 results using the 2015-16 Street Survey Youth & Adult Alcohol and Marijuana Survey - (Point in time)
2.2 By June 30, 2016 40% of participants of community education events will state information from these events provides information that helps me talk to my children about substance abuse. 2.3 By Sept 30, 2015 a teacher Identification Training will be conducted for Maricopa School Teachers. 80 % of trainees will indicate they either agree or strongly agree that the information they received from the training was helpful with learning about substances with 2015 serving as the baseline.
2.4 By June 30, 2016 5th grade life skills youth will report a 5% increase compared to FY14 results using in speaking to their parents about marijuana use per the 2015-16 ADHS Core Instrument for Adolescents - Pre-Post
2.5 By June 2016, coalition members will demonstrate a 5% overall increase compared to FY14 results in their satisfaction with the coalition's capacity to work together as measured by the 2015-16 Coalition Instrument - Retro-post

Results

The following results represent data collected during the third quarter of fiscal year 2015-16. Percentages over 50% are shaded to aid in interpretation. Results from questions that allow respondents to mark “all that apply” may not add to 100% because each respondent may mark more than one answer. The percentages for those types of survey items represent the number of responses divided by the total number of responses for the particular item. Reported percentages in the narratives are rounded to the nearest whole number; please consult the relevant tables for more precise percentages. Percentages in tables may not add to 100% due to missing data for the survey item.

There were 65 Street Surveys completed in the third quarter, with the majority being adult (78.6%), with most being female (63.8%) and non-Latino (70.4%). Just over half (58.5%) indicated that underage drinking was a problem in their community, with 51.6% saying they were aware of messages addressing the need to talk about drugs and alcohol. Of those who were aware of the messages, 35.7% said they would bring up the subject more, down from 56.5% in the second quarter. When asked about the risk and harm associated with underage drinking, 29.2% indicated "great risk" with youth taking one or two drinks nearly every day, and 58.5% marking "great risk" with youth having five or more drinks once or twice a week. Only 3.2% said it would be "very hard" for youth to obtain alcohol in the community, and when asked the types of events that youth obtained alcohol 80.6% indicated at parties with friends and no adults present.

Respondents were asked whether they were aware of messages about the harmful effects of marijuana and 49.1% said they were aware of these messages. One-third of those surveyed (33.3%) said it would be "very easy" for youth to obtain marijuana in their community. Regarding the harm associated with youth usage of marijuana, 20.7% indicated "no risk" with youth trying marijuana once or twice, though 61.0% marked "great risk" with youth using marijuana every day. When asked about the events where youth obtained marijuana, the top choice was at a party with friends and no adults present (80.0%) followed by desert parties (52.7%).

MACAASA administered a presentation survey regarding alcohol usage to community residents. There were 54 surveys completed, with the majority being female (71.2%), 37.7% Hispanic or Latino, 33.3% listing their race as White, and 62.3% youth under the age of 18 years. Those surveyed were asked how they felt about alcohol usage before and after the event. When asked if they understood a lot about alcohol abuse in their community, 71.8% agreed before the event and 95.7% after the event. An increase from 56.1% to 87.0% was evident for those expressing awareness of the ways that underage drinking was affecting their community. Similarly, while 40.5% agreed they knew that they could do to help the community, 69.4% felt this way after the event indicating that the presentation had a positive effect on those who attended. Most of those surveyed agreed that the event motivated them to get more active in the community (79.6%), the presentation was interesting (92.6%), and that they would recommend the conference to their friends (83.3%).
