Risk Assessment Information for School Groups visiting Stamford Bridge*

The ‘Lead teacher’ refers to the Teacher responsible for the group who must supervise the group and remain with the group at all times during the tour.

The risks and consequences of possible hazards are graded H – High, M – Medium or L – Low.

Lead teacher to ensure that all children have suitable clothing.
Sun / L / M / Lead teacher to ensure that the group are aware of the dangers relating to the sun i.e. heatstroke and sunburn.
Lead teacher to ensure that the group have suitable clothing, ie. long sleeves, trousers and sun hat.
Storms/High wind/Lightning/Flooding / L / H / Lead teacher to seek appropriate shelter and suspend a session should conditions cause safety to be affected. The routes around the stadium will be gritted by our ground staff when ice or snow is forecast.
However, sudden weather changes or severe conditions cannot always be dealt with immediately and a decision should be made between the Chelsea Museum staff and the lead teacher whether to continue the session.
Terrain
Approaching the site / Lead teacher to be familiar with the transport links and approach to the stadium, brief the group of any control measures whilst on public transport or coaches and carry out a specific transport risk assessment if applicable
Slips, trips and falls, falling objects / L / L / Lead teacher to ensure that children have appropriate footwear.
Lead teacher to brief children that running is not permitted and to take extra care on stairs, entrances etc.
Cleaning can be undertaken at any time around the stadium and signage will be provided if there are wet floors.
Any concerns regards conditions or spillages should be reported to the stadium personnel immediately so they can be dealt with.
Escalators and Lifts / L / L / Lead teacher to brief children to exercise caution and to:
- Use stairs where possible and if the whole group can not travel together in a lift ensure a responsible adult accompanies each group.
- Use revolving doors/escalators carefully keeping fingers away from hinges/lift doors etc.
Equipment
Vehicle traffic movement in pedestrian areas / L / H / Lead teacher to brief group to be aware of other users on the roads and paths when moving around the stadium eg. fork-lift trucks, delivery vehicles. There is 24 hour vehicle access around the whole of the site with few segregated areas for pedestrians. School groups must be closely supervised at all times when outside and when leaving buildings in to roadways.
Security and other site users
Other site users / L / M / Lead teachers must supervise children at all times on site. A large number of external visitors attend tours and events in the conference suites and hotel at the Stadium.
Lost individual / L / H / Lead teacher to retain a completed register with contact details, mobile phone nos. etc. of children in the group, including emergency contact details and any other necessary medical/allergies/dietary information.
Lead teacher to ensure the group is briefed on the correct lost person procedure before travelling and to conduct a head count before leaving and on arrival at each location.
Lead teacher to be aware of and ensure children aware of allocated lost person point.
Lost group / L / M / Lead teacher to ensure contact at base is aware of estimated return time to centre and has emergency contact information for the group.
Child Protection / L / H / To adhere to Child Protection Policies including CRB checking for any staff left alone with children. All adults accompanying children should hold a current CRB check and current Child protection training certificate
Accident and Emergency procedures
Accident/Emergency / L / M / Lead teacher to be aware of the nearest appointed First Aider and medical facilities – it is a legal requirement to have first aid trained representative brought with the group.
Chelsea personnel to advise in correct accident procedures and reporting.
A list of first aiders is posted on walls around the stadium and first aid kits are held in each area. Should it be necessary you must call for an ambulance directly (9) 999 and then the security team on 3333 who will meet the ambulance and direct it to the correct location.
Fire extinguishers/ Fire Exits / L / H / The fire alarm is a continuous ringing bell. All staff and visitors must leave the building immediately closing doors behind them where possible and assemble at the nearest designated point. The Lead teacher is to complete a roll call and advise a member of the Chelsea fire marshal team if any children are missing. All people must remain at the assembly point until advised to return inside the building by a member of the security staff. If you discover a fire, press one of the red call points at fire exit doors and continue to the nearest assembly point, following instructions as before. The fire assembly points are marked on the map of the stadium. Please do not prop doors open with fire extinguishers
General
Medical conditions/
Allergic reaction / L / H / Lead teacher to check group’s medical information before the visit for specific conditions.
Lead teacher to ensure that children carry and take any medication/precautions as necessary e.g. asthma inhalers.
(eg. epi-pen permission forms for Lead teacher to administer if necessary).
Overcrowding / L / M / Lead teacher to ensure that additional children/adults have not joined the group.
Hazardous Chemicals / L / H / Chelsea personnel to ensure that groups are fully briefed about the presence of any chemicals around the stadium and suitable precautions, such as when the pitch has been sprayed/ treated during the initial safety talk.

No access to pitch. Where barriers or taped areas have been provided, do not move them or walk within them.
