Townsville Primary School Sport

President’s Report

It is once again that time of the year when as President I can reflect on the great achievements of Primary School Sport in Townsville. Across Townsville we have many schools that participate in Interschool Sport for all three seasons of sport while some schools have chosen to participate for one or two seasons based on the needs of the school. It is without a doubt, that our association offers a quality Interschool Sport competition and when speaking to other regions, we are noted as the region that has the optimum competition. It is a fact though that changes are inevitable and with the increasing demands of the Australian Curriculum schools are having to make decisions based on the school needs and with the Flying Start initiative, the future might look a little differently. However, I read with interest recently when the QLD Minister for Education, Training and Employment was forthright in his opinion that sport is an integral part of what we should be doing in schools. I hope that this will continue to be the realisation for our schools in Townsville.

Our Athletics carnival has a high priority within school calendars and forty four schools participated in 2014. This meant that 3000 students participated in this carnival with 250 students making it to NQ trials. Netball and Touch (boys and girls) were the most popular sports for 2014 with Rugby League coming in very closely behind. During 2014 we hosted championships for Australian Rules as well as Basketball with the National Championships for Basketball also being hosted in Townsville. Hence this meant a great deal of work for our people and of course the quality of our people and their organisational expertise ensured that all went off without a hitch.

This year we held a social event for the first time for Townsville Primary School Sport members which was very successful and I am sure will be an annual event from now on.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Executive of Townsville Primary School Sport especially Brook who works hard to keep it all running smoothly and Debbie and Scott for their roles. A special thanks to the individual Sport Executives as well as teachers who train, coach and participate in the competition; teachers who also nominate to be part of trials and coach, manage or train NQ teams. Without your commitment, energy and passion we would not have a high quality competition.

Thank you to Principals, Rob Armstrong (Regional Sport Coordinator) and to Sharon Schimming, DETE North Queensland Regional Director and Business Services Managers who all support us in our endeavour to ensure our students are healthy, active and prepared for a lifelong journey.

I look forward to our continued positive relationships with schools across Townsville and to another prosperous sporting year in 2015 and beyond.

Regards
