Station & Course Logistics:

Download directions to Sagehen here… http://sagehen.ucnrs.org/ You should receive an email with the gate combination a few days before the workshop. If not, contact the Coordinator a day or two before arriving.

Drive slowly--exceeding the 15-mph speed limit on the narrow dirt access road behind the gates is a big no-no! When you reach the station buildings, park in tight and efficiently even if you are the first one there—we are very constrained on parking space and large groups can arrive at any time. Do not block the road; a fire truck must be able to get by you. You can also park at Highway-89 and carpool, walk or ride your mountain bike the easy 1.5-miles of dirt road to the station.

Come prepared for both indoor and outdoor classroom work and walking around outside. It can be VERY cold at Sagehen in the mornings and evenings, and warm in the afternoons. Meadows can be wet; waterproof hiking boots or other comfortable hiking shoes are best. Bring warm bedding and night clothes.

Bring a sack lunch for the Saturday field session and also something to put together for Sunday lunch. Energy bars or other snacks are good to have. Drinking water at the station is excellent—all students should bring a water bottle to refill.

Participants wishing to spend the night at Sagehen on Friday, April 18: there is free camping just beyond our back gate at the Sagehen Forest Service campground. The site has pit toilets and fire pits, no water.

If you would prefer to overnight within the Sagehen Creek Field Station, you will be assessed the $20/night UC-rate user fee for either camping or for a bed in a cabin if available. Bring your own linens and/or camping gear and check with us for cabin assignment or about appropriate campsites before settling in. We must have advanced notice if you are planning to stay in a cabin Friday night.

Plan on storing any food you bring in our kitchen facilities, not your car. Station users have access to a communal kitchen for food preparation, with standard cooking and dining equipment. Visitors are expected to leave all station facilities a bit cleaner than they found them. http://sagehen.ucnrs.org/kitchen_list.htm

Cell phones do not work at the field station. There is signal on the access road at the highway. The station has a public visitor phone with answering machine for local and incoming calls (530-582-5625), as well as wireless Internet. The station has public computers, TV room, bathhouse facilities with hot and cold running water, toilets and showers.
