Sedgefield Middle SchoolProfile

Sedgefield Middle School is a Title 1 funded school with close to 750 students in grades 6-8. Sedgefield MS also houses a Secondary Montessori Magnet program that serves students in grades 7 and 8. Student enrollment has risen steadily the past three years with a dramatic increase in the number of students with limited English proficiency. With an increase in enrollment, there has been an increase in the number of teachers and support staff that work with students. To support our students and their families, Sedgefield has a partnership with Communities in Schools and several faith-based and business partners. Forty-seven percent of staff has 0-3 years of experience with 57% of teachers having four or more years of experience. Fifty-five percent of teachers hold advanced academic degrees.

Sedgefield continues to transition teachers, students and parents to the rigorous NC Standard Course of Study based on the Common Core curriculum. Teachers participate in a variety of continuous professional development to ensure alignment between the curriculum and student work. Students participate in a data-driven process where their growth is monitored throughout the year through common formative assessments and MAP. This information helps to guide teachers in their planning process. Students also are able to identify strengths and weaknesses when analyzing their assessment results, which helpstudents, understand their progress with grade level expectations. Sedgefield is in year two of a balanced literacy implementation plan that utilizes a variety of strategies to increase student’s proficiency in reading, writing and speaking. Sedgefield also has integrated technology into many classrooms utilizing Chromebooks, Ipads and laptop computers. Sedgefield was just named a 1:1 early adopter school where each student will be able to utilize a technology device in each core class. This supports student engagement and the ability to work efficiently in a 21st Century environment. The focus of Sedgefield is to provide an environment where students are challenged academically with supportive teachers and staff that can help students obtain the skills necessary to be prepared for high school.
