2014-15 APPLICATION COVER SHEET

About the Application

Applications to the Faculty of Law Graduate Program include two parts:

  1. An application to the University of Toronto School of Graduate Studies (SGS) using an online application that is housed on a secure university server, and
  2. A hard-copy Faculty of Law application and supporting documents sent directly to the Faculty of Law.

For the online application, applicants can edit an in-progress application and check the status of all documents submitted using a secure password and UserID. A valid email account is needed to complete the online application, as the University will correspond with applicants using email.

Applications are considered complete and can be reviewed only after ALL documentation is received by the Faculty of Law (this includes letters of reference submitted online by referees and transcripts uploaded or sent by mail). Please read and be familiar with all deadlines.

Please note that a separate application is required for the Global Professional LLM (GPLLM) program Applications for the 2014-15 GPLLM program are available at the GPLLM website and accepted on a rolling basis. The GPLLM application deadline is June 30, 2013

LLM Degree

The thesis-intensive format allows students to elect a thesis of between 4 and 16 credits, written in combination with some coursework. The longer thesis is aimed at law students who have demonstrated a strong potential for advanced research and writing in accordance with the standards of the Faculty of Law, many of whom desire a career in legal academia. The shorter thesis option is aimed at law students who wish to undertake significant independent research but also want exposure to other areas of law through coursework.

The coursework-only format is designed for law students who wish to specialize in a specific area of law, particularly in one of the Law Faculty's several strengths, to develop an understanding of North American legal processes and laws, or to explore the common law at an advanced level.

The Faculty offers concentrations in the areas of Business Law, Criminal Law, and Legal Theory within the LLM degree program. Entry into these concentrations is on a competitive basis.

Please note: the LLM diploma does not reflect whether you took the thesis intensive or coursework only LLM. Students accepted into a concentration within the LLM program, however, will have the area of concentration designated on their transcript.
