Mr Jones further stated that he was very disappointed in the gelding’s performance and believed he was a beaten horse racing at the winning post to receive the bell. Mr Jones was reprimanded under AR 149(2) for an unacceptable drivein that he elected to make DENARAU work hard in the death position when it’s exposed form did not support that this gelding had been able to work hard early in its previous starts, as a resultDENARAU commenced to tire from approximately the 700 metres and was beaten by more than 100 metres. DENARAU underwent a post-race veterinary examination and it was reported that no obvious abnormalities could be detected. Connections were advised that DENARAU has been stood down from racing for a period of 10 days and until the completion of a satisfactory trial.

Driver Todd Rattray was queried in relation to the driving tactics he adopted on WHO IS HARDEEN when he elected to restrain the gelding to the back of the field and take up a position on the peg line. Mr Rattray stated that he did not want to be held up behind tiring horses and therefore believed the peg line was the best possible position for this gelding. Driver Nathan Ford was queried in relation to the driving tactics adopted on SPOT NINE. Mr Ford stated that he had not received any instructions from trainer Zeke Slater, however he drove the gelding forward, which is consistent with the gelding’s racing pattern. Mr Ford further stated that he was not disappointed in the performance of SPOT NINE this evening.

Trainer Zeke Slater was queried in relation to the apparent improved performance of ARDLUSSA EXPRESS NZ after this gelding was beaten 56 metres and finished last at its last start in Hobart. Mr Slater stated that the distance and start types for both events were different. ARDLUSSA EXPRESS NZ didn’t have to do much work tonightand was able to obtain a soft trip behind the leader. Mr Slater further stated that he was not surprised with the apparent improved performance of ARDLUSSA EXPRESS NZ, however he was disappointed with the gelding’s performance at its last start. Mr Slater believed that the sectional times at its last start explained the previous disappointing performance of this gelding, as ARDLUSSA EXPRESS NZ had never been asked to do much work out of the gate previously.

Mr Slater was further queried in relation to the driving instructions that where given to drivers Ricky Duggan (ARDLUSSA EXPRESS NZ) and Nathan Ford (SPOT NINE). Mr Slater stated that he doesn’t usually give driving instructions and that he normally tells his drivers how the horses have been going. Mr Slater further stated that Mr Duggan would have been aware that ARDLUSSA EXPRESS NZ had to be driven the way it was tonight and that Mr Ford had driven SPOT NINE at its last start and knows that the gelding is a one paced horseand therefore drove the gelding accordingly. The inquiry was adjourned to allow all of the evidence to be considered.

Post-race swab samples were taken from ARDLUSSA EXPRESS NZ the winner of the event.
