AHOUSE RESOLUTION
TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, UPON THE PASSING OF DR. HARRY LEON JUNE, SR., OF WILLIAMSBURG COUNTY, AND TO EXTEND THEIR DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS LARGE AND LOVING FAMILY AND HIS MANY FRIENDS.
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives were genuinely saddened to learn of the death of Dr. Harry Leon June, Sr., at the age of fiftysix on Saturday, June 7, 2014; and
Whereas, the son of the late Sarah Whack June and William June, he was born on October 3, 1957, and reared in Greeleyville where he attended Sunday school and worship services at Greeleyville Mission African Methodist Episcopal Church in his youth; and
Whereas, in 1975, Harry Junegraduated from C.E. Murray High School,and he earned a bachelor's in psychology from South Carolina State College,where he was a respected and beloved member of Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity; and
Whereas, later he received a master’s in clinical psychology from the University of the District of Columbia, as well as a second master’s in behavioral neuroscience and a doctorate in behavioral neuroscience and psychopharmacology, all from Howard University; and
Whereas, Dr. Juneserved as a faculty member conducting research in his own research lab at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and Howard University; and
Whereas, in addition to working with some of the most renowned scientists in the world, he taught and conducted research at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Indiana University School of Medicine, and Indiana UniversityPurdue University; and
Whereas, within ten years, Dr. June’s work resulted in the acquisition ofover eight million dollars in grant funds andmore thanforty published papers, and he was promoted to full professorship with tenure at Indiana UniversityPurdue University; and
Whereas, in 2011, he returned to Howard University as a faculty member in the medical school with the status of full professor in the department of psychiatry and behavioral science, the department of pharmacology and experimental therapeutics, and the department of psychology in the graduate school; and
Whereas, he has left behind his cherished wife, Terri White, four children: Harry Leon June, Jr., James Franklin June, Shannon White, and Serrita Francois, four grandchildren, five sisters, and three brothers; and
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are grateful for the life and legacy of Dr. Harry June, a true son of South Carolina, and for the standard of excellence and compassion he set for all who knew him. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
Thatthe members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow, upon the passing of Dr. Harry Leon June, Sr., of Williamsburg County, and extend their deepest sympathy to his large and loving family and his many friends.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to the family of Dr. Harry Leon June, Sr.
