A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE MAMIE JONES BANKS OF MCCORMICK COUNTY UPON THE OCCASION OF HER RETIREMENT, TO COMMEND HER FOR HER FORTYNINE YEARS OF DEDICATED SERVICE AS AN EDUCATOR, AND TO WISH HER MUCH HAPPINESS AND FULFILLMENT IN ALL HER FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, it is with great pleasure that the South Carolina House of Representatives honors those individuals who give tirelessly of themselves to the welfare of this great state’s most important legacy, its children; and

Whereas, Mamie Jones Banks of McCormick County, retiring after fortynine fruitful years in the field of education, stands among their number as an outstanding public benefactor, one much admired in her role as both teacher and administrator; and

Whereas, Mamie received her teacher training at South Carolina State University, graduating in the Class of 1964; and

Whereas, fortynine years ago, an eager firstyear teacher, she began her work as an educator with the McCormick County School District and dedicated the rest of her career to that district; and

Whereas, having worked as a teacher for twentyseven years, this Mt. Carmel native was named assistant principal of McCormick Middle School, becoming the first female school administrator in McCormick and serving in that capacity for twelve years; and

Whereas, long acknowledged as a master teacher, Mamie has mentored numerous teachers over the years, some of whom have been her own former students; and

Whereas, for the past ten years, she has served as director of adult education for McCormick County. Now, having touched thousands of students during her nearly five decades in education, Mamie Jones Banks will conclude an honored career in public school education; and

Whereas, an avid fundraiser for the scholarships her sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha, awards to students in Abbeville, Greenwood, and McCormick counties, Mamie established a scholarship in 2003 to benefit two to three McCormick High School students every year; and

Whereas, at home, this wife of fortynine years is the mother of five and grandmother of seven; and

Whereas, having set the bar of achievement high in her profession, Mamie Jones Banks will be remembered upon her retirement with affection and gratitude by colleagues, students, parents, and legislative friends for years to come. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, congratulate Mamie Jones Banks of McCormick County upon the occasion of her retirement, commend her for her fortynine years of dedicated service as an educator, and wish her much happiness and fulfillment in all her future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to Mamie Jones Banks.
