Stewards queried Justin Campbell, driver of BOLTNMACH, in relation to his driving tactics on the gelding. Mr Campbell explained that after beginning well from a wide barrier it was his intention to attempt to obtain a trail in the one out line but when unable to do so he had moved forward in attempt to race outside the leader at which point THE MINT also moved forward. Mr Campbell was then unable to get to the position outside the leader and attempted to restrain to obtain a position in the one out trail behind THE MINT but was unable to do so when the tempo of the race slowed. Mr Campbell further explained he then had no other option but to remain three wide and did so without applying pressure to the leader. BOLTNMACH finished sixth with a beaten margin of 20.2 metres. Stewards accepted the explanation from Mr Campbell.

Post race swab samples were taken from MACH MY DAY the winner of the event.

GENERAL

Racing Services Tasmania Office – 9th December 2013

Stewards conducted an inquiry into the circumstances of a blood sample taken from PRECIOUS DRAGON prior to that horse contesting the Special Relay stakes at the Tasmanian Pacing Club meeting on the 10th November 2013. Upon analysis the sample was tested and found to have a total carbon dioxide concentration in excess of the permitted level of 36mmol/L. Trainer Rodney Ashwood pleaded guilty to a charge under rule AR 190(1) which states that a horse must be presented to a race free of prohibited substances. In determining penalty stewards considered Mr Ashwood’s guilty plea, the fact that it was his first offence under this rule and the length of time he has held a trainer’s licence. Stewards were also mindful that any penalty must act as a deterrent to other industry participants. Mr Ashwood’s licences to train and drive were disqualified for a period of three months commencing midnight the 11the December 2013 and expiring midnight the 10th March 2014. PRECIOUS DRAGON was also disqualified from its placing in the race and judge’s placings were amended accordingly.

Racing Services Tasmania Office – 13th December 2013

Stewards conducted an inquiry into the results of a sample provided by driver Campbell Watt and the TPC trials on 7th October 2013. Upon analysis the sample was found to contain Nordiazepam, Oxazepam and Temazepam at concentrations in excess of the permitted threshold. Mr Watt pleaded guilty to a charge under rule AR 252(1) and his licence to drive was suspended for a period of five weeks backdated to commence on the 8th November 2013 and expiring midnight the 15th December 2013. In determining penalty stewards took into consideration that the substances were present in a prescription medication taken by Mr Watt. Mr Watt must provide a sample which tests clear before being permitted to drive in trials and races.

Stewards conducted and inquiry into the results of a sample provided by driver Adrian Collins at the LPC meeting on the 3rd November 2013. Upon analysis the sample was found to contain d-amphetamine and d-methamphetamine. Mr Collins was found guilty of a charge under rule AR 252(1) and his licence to drive in races was suspended for a period of four months backdated to commence on the 25th November 2013 and expiring midnight the 24th March 2014. In determining penalty Stewards considered that it was Mr Collins’ first offence under this rule and that he earns a significant portion of his income from race driving. As Mr Collins had provided a clear sample prior to the inquiry he is able effective immediately to drive in trackwork and trials.

Carrick Park Pacing Club Trials – 14th December 2013

Trainer Mick Alexander was fined the sum of $50 under the provisions of rule AR 223 for wearing inadequate footwear when attending to his horses at the trials.
