CHARLIE CHARLIE hung in and raced roughly after the start.

Driver Kate MacLeod (WHY TAKE TIME) was queried in relation to her driving tactics during the final lap of the event. Miss MacLeod stated that her mare was best suited when driven as a sit and sprint horse. Miss MacLeod further added that she endeavoured to gain a run in the three wide line at the 500 metres but was unable to do so until rounding the home turn.

Driver Adrian Collins (KIKUYU NZ) was queried in relation to his driving tactics from the 1100 metres when Mr Collins left the running line and took up a position in the three wide line to the outside of WHY TAKE TIME and then failed to improve his position until entering the back straight. Mr Collins advised stewards that due to the relatively slow early sectional he felt that he needed to move three wide and attempt to put his horse into the race and hopefully also to obtain a trail. When no horse went in front of him he was then left in the three wide line. Mr Collins further advised that shortly after pulling out into the three wide line, the speed of the race quickened and as a result he was unable to make ground. Mr Collins stated that he was disappointed in the horse’s inability to make ground when he had pulled out into the three wide line and that he felt that the horse was not travelling well when racing in this position. A subsequent post race veterinary examination of the KIKUYU NZ revealed no apparent abnormalities. Stewards adjourned the inquiry to obtain and review the betting records of this race.

Stewards accepted the explanation of Mr Dornauf.
