Raising Achievement - Setting Our Children Up for Success 2012 tour

Rationale

The three organisations Dyslexia Foundation, SPELD NZ and ADHD Rotorua recognise that the at risk student group take up a large amount of management and teaching resources. We are also aware that the numbers of children with learning differences/disabilities/difficulties such as dyslexia, dyspraxia, aspergers, ADHD, autism etc are now thought to make up, up to 22% of our learning population. As classroom teachers and educators all of us are acutely aware that we have had little or no training in our basic teaching qualifications to cater adequately and optimise achievement in these student groups. For the first time a group of the support organisations have got together to bring you a package of professional development that will allow you to manage these student groups effectively, improve outcomes, raise achievement and reduce time loss on dealing with problems connected to these student groups.

Our presenter Jenny Tebbutt (profile below) is a specialist teacher with extensive experience and qualifications in the New Zealand education sector. Jenny is a Past President of SPELD NZ, is currently the co-ordinator for ADHD Rotorua and a consultant bringing professional development to New Zealand schools for the Dyslexia Foundation under their 4D schools initiative.

4D Consultancy
4D Consultancy offers a range of flexible training to meet the needs of individual schools and/or RTLB clusters. The training is based on the philosophy "Get it right for Dyslexics – Get it right for all" which is actioned by adopting a 'notice and adjust' attitude and approach in the classroom. By identifying specific learning styles and thinking preferences we empower individual learners.

SPELD NZ

Works specifically with assessing students with dyslexia and specific learning disabilities and meeting the needs of students through targeted tuition. A large component of their work is professional development and teacher training through the NZQA approved level 5 teachers course Certificate in Specific Learning Disabilities. SPELD increasingly works alongside schools and classroom teachers to raise achievement for at risk student groups.

ADHD Rotorua

Offer a multimodal approach to dealing with ADHD and other specific learning difficulties. Their approach supports medical, emotional, social, behavioural and educational aspects of each diagnosis.
