Hawthorne Hill & Carillon Park

Thursday May 5, 2011 - 0900 – 1330

Meet your bus at the front of the hotel and set out for a guided tour of Hawthorn Hill.

Hawthorn Hill is the mansion that Orville Wright called home for nearly 35 years. The building has a long and colorful history of hosting distinguished visitors including Charles A. Lindbergh and President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. It is a fascinating glimpse into the life and times of the Wright Brothers. Located in the quiet village of Oakwood, Hawthorne Hill can accommodate only a few visitors at a time. While you wait to see the Mansion, enjoy Carillon Historical Park.

Founded by Colonel Edward and Edith Deeds, the Park is situated on a beautiful 65-acre campus between the Great Miami River and a glacial moraine. The Park immerses you in the region's history - from Dayton's founding in 1796 through two centuries of expansion, industrialism and innovation. Learn about these revolutionary achievements while strolling through the Park. There are 25 historical buildings and hundreds of artifacts in the exhibits.

See the original 1905 Wright Flyer III, the world's first practical airplane and National Historic Landmark, the 1835 B&O (Grasshopper) steam locomotive, and the first automobile self-starter or just explore the Deeds Carillon, one of Dayton’s best-known landmarks, and the largest carillon in Ohio.

Lunch on your own at the Carillon Park café. Buses will return you to your hotel by 1330, your afternoon and evening are free.
