Residency Name:Clinton County, Residency 7-1

Residency Description:

Clinton County, a part of the North Country Region, is the northern most county in the State of New York. It is surrounded on one side by the waters of Lake Champlain and the Evergreen peaks of the Adirondacks on the other. The Residency operates out of six locations with a core staff of 55 persons, and maintains 23 roadways for a total of 725 lane miles, 3 rest areas, a Welcome Center, and a truck inspection station. It serves 1 city, 14 towns, 4 villages, and 4 Border Crossings. The Champlain Border Crossing is the fifth busiest US-Canadian Border crossing.

Residency GreenLITES Highlights:

Sound environmental practices are integrated into the high volume of work completed by the staff of Residency 7-1. These practices include:

  • Incorporating recycling techniques in the Residency’s pavement program.
  • Several lane miles of roads were paved by Residency staff.
  • Exercising proactive measures in ditching and grading of embankments.
  • Using innovative grading techniques to re-establish sheet flow.
  • Repairing six culverts in the residency using a less intrusive slip line technique, where a sleeve is installed within an existing culvert barrel and then stabilized.
  • Incorporating almost a mile of live and mechanical snow fence to reduce the use of additional resources to clear snow drifts.
  • Usingsalt brine as a liquid anti-ice treatment.
  • Reducing the Residency’s mowing foot print.
  • Using recycling bins at all Residency facilities.
  • Pursuing a rigid schedule of maintenance of buildings and equipment by employees.

Residency Name:Franklin County, Residency 7-2

Residency Description:

Franklin County is a unique county in northern New York. The county is a blend of the rugged Adirondacks in the southto the St. Lawrence Valley Lowlands and Canadian border in the north. This geography encourages the residency to undertake sustainable activities that minimize the consumption of resources and help limit the impact the highway system has on the environment.

Some of the key activities the residency engaged in include:

  • Controlling invasive species both in and out of the Adirondack Park.
  • Installing mechanical snow fence in the lowland open fields to minimize drifting snow.
  • Reusing various materials such as asphalt millings and stone to lessen the need for mining additional materials.
  • Repairing shoulders to encourage safe walking and bicycling.
  • Repairing washouts and slopes to minimize erosion and sediment from entering the many streams and lakes throughout the county.
  • Providing training on energy conservation, salt usage and vehicle idling.These trainings, combined with outreach programs such as Adopt-A-Highway and appearances at various schools, encourage sound environmental decisions by both the workers of the Residency and also those living in Franklin County.

Residency Name:Nassau North, Residency 10-1

Residency Description:

The Residency is located within Nassau County, a suburban area on western Long Island. The Residency encompasses forty villages. Major routes in the Residency include the Long Island Expressway,NorthernState Parkway, Routes 25, 25A, and 106.The Residency has 63 staff.

Residency GreenLITES Highlights:

Environmental stewardship is demonstrated in the Residency through the following activities:

  • Reducing mowing distances to only what is necessary for sight distance and for vehicles to pull over safely in emergency.
  • Cleaning small culverts and drainage basins.
  • Repairing grates and installing biker-friendly grates.
  • Repairing washed out shoulders.
  • Instead of using harmful herbicides, the Residency uses hand tractors to clear weeds to expose the guide rail.
  • Litter and debris pickup was intensified in partnership with the Sponsor-A-Highway program contractors to rid highways of litter.
  • During the winter, the Residency embarked on proactive pavement treatmentswith brine,hours before the onset of a snow storm, instead of spreading salt during the storm and plowing it away, and switched to using more environmentally friendly deicers.
  • The Residency has begun an energy efficient program to upgrade all its facilities.
  • Only recycled paper products and eco-friendly chemicals are used at the facilities.
  • The temporary asphalt patch material used by the Residency to fill potholes is made with eco-friendly materials.
