2017 Section Leadership Application

This position is for section leader and will be responsible for assisting the Director of Bands and the Drum Major(s), keeping the section on track, offering to help those who are having difficulty, and being an example for the rest of the section and band. All section leaders must be able to exhibit quality leadership skills that include but are not limited to:

Requirements:

· Applicant must be a current student of ESU, have been in the ESU Marching Band during the 2016 Season, and enrolled in Marching Band for Fall 2017.

· Must have at least 1 year of previous leadership experience (college or high school).

· Must have a good understanding of marching techniques and skills.

· Must have a solid understanding of performing and teaching various styles and techniques.

· Must understand the concept of motivation and discipline as a leader for a collegiate marching band.

· Applicant must submit a completed application and send the required audition video to Dr. Woodworth via email, dropbox, or YouTube (a YouTube link is preferred).

· Incomplete applications will not be considered.

· Applicant must submit one letters of recommendation along with this application. The letter cannot be from ESU music faculty, family members, friends or significant others. They can be from teachers, non-music professors, coaches, etc. The reference’s relationship to you must be identified in the letter.

· If you are an ESU Music Student, I will be contacting your primary, and possibly, your ensemble professors as well. Please do not contact them on my behalf.

· Applicants must be able to attend the entirety of band camp, and should have limited potential conflicts during the school year. It is extremely important that the section leader attends the entire band camp, and is available to lead during the overwhelming majority of the school year.

· Applicants must be able to handle all the physical responsibilities of this leadership position. This includes, but is not limited to, the ability to lift and move the podiums and other band related equipment, lead stretches and physical training of your section as necessary, marching with the band during parades, performances and ALL rehearsals, etc… The section leader must be able to go on the field 100% at all times throughout the school year and should not be “leading from the sidelines”. Of course, minor injuries or sickness can occur, but this is the most important proximity leadership position on the field, and the section leader must lead by example in all areas, on the field, and at all times.

Required Audition Video:

Students interested in being a section leader will need to submit a Video file, or YouTube link demonstrating the following:

Video sample 1 - the ability to teach the ESMH marching fundamentals. This could be done by the applicant either teaching other current ESMH band member volunteers, or other individuals that may not understand marching and are new to the concepts, or even demonstrating your ability to teach a concept to the camera alone – as if the camera is your student. I will leave this up to you. I would like to see you teach the following commands:

-Attention

-Mark Time

-Forward March

-Halt

Video sample 2 - it will also be important on the video to demonstrate the ability of calling commands in addition to the teaching element.

Video sample 3 - In addition, if you are a wind player, I would like to see your ability to do simple conducting at various tempos. Percussionists, I will need to see your ability to do various tap offs (in duple and triple feel).

Video sample 4 - As a section leader, you must also be highly proficient on your instrument. To end your video, show off on your instrument. Your choice of music, style, tempo… just use this opportunity to show off that you are proficient in your own abilities, in order to be able to be an example to others.
