Subject: Tak Utsumi: Oil -- "That stuff is too valuable to burn!"

Tak Utsumi:
Oil --
"That stuff is too valuable to burn!"

Noting with interest in your recent list distributions, items such as:

> 95% of Nigerian revenue comes from oil export, 40% of which is exported to north America

brings to mind the above-captioned quote from an engineer, from perhaps a few decades ago:

"That stuff is too valuable to burn!"

which I've seen occasionally since then as well, from people involved with various facets of exploration, production, distribution, or uses of oil.
In analyzing what will happen with regard to oil production, shipment, export and the like, it would be useful to take care to do such things as:

Unbundle energy-related uses from other uses such as petrochemicals
Separate uses which worsen environmental footprint from uses which don't

Reactions welcome -- a major issue area in which I work, at the UN and elsewhere, is that of renewable energy and the environment, and I'm in the process of setting up within Rotary International, a Rotarian Action Group for Renewable Energy and the Environment.
I mention these things here for reasons including making explicit the inextricably intertwined relationships between energy and the environment, relationships that when not made explicit -- or worse, ignored -- lead to suboptimal public policy, bad decisions and action, at worst catastrophically bad, for both energy and the environment.
Your email list traffic is highly encouraging and energizing, particularly the active participation in the initiatives about which it reports, of so many people who have so much to contribute, whose commitment and dedication inspires confidence.
I look forward to seeing this work summon the best that all concerned can and should bring to it, building on your years of work and leadership, for the overall success of these initiatives and of all concerned.
I'd be happy to meet anyone you'd recommend about any of the above, when we might be in the same place at the same time, probably in New York and possibly at UN HQ where I am pretty much every day, putting people and projects together.
Looking forward
Thanks for your help on this.
If anyone needs anything else, about the above or anything else, let me know.
If this email message leads to any useful or interesting results, I'd be interested in hearing about it.
