AHOUSE RESOLUTION
TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR STILES POINT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TEACHER MARY BETH MEGGETT OF CHARLESTON COUNTY, AND TO CONGRATULATE HER UPON BEING NAMED THE 2009 RECIPIENT OF THE PRESTIGIOUS PRESIDENTIAL AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE TEACHING.
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives were pleased to learn that fourthgrade teacher Mary Beth Meggett has been honored with the 2009 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching; and
Whereas, the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching is the highest recognition that a kindergarten through twelfthgrade math or science teacher can receive for outstanding teaching in the United States, and only one math and one science teacher per state can win; and
Whereas, established in 1983 by the United States Congress, the Presidential Awards program aims to expand and exemplify the definition of excellent science and mathematical teaching; and
Whereas, Mary Beth Meggett, who won the state’s award in science, adapts her lessons based on the ability of each child and builds trust with her students so they can take risks, make mistakes, and learn from them; and
Whereas, honored in the fall at a White House ceremony, she received ten thousand dollars from the National Science Foundation and a presidential citation, and she has participated in informationexchange programs and visits with members of Congress and science agency leaders; and
Whereas, during her ten years of teaching at Stiles Point Elementary School, she participated in training programs through a National Science Foundation grant to increase student achievement in science, and she implemented the suggested strategies and submitted her classroom to evaluation; and
Whereas, Mary Beth Meggett has brought pride and recognition to her school and her community, and the members of the House of Representatives are grateful forthe dedication and standard of excellence she brings to her students and to the field of education. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor Stiles Point Elementary School teacher Mary Beth Meggett of Charleston County, and congratulate her upon being named the 2009 recipient of the prestigious Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mary Beth Meggett.
