Part II – Advisor Application Form

The John E. Skinner Memorial Fund was established in memory of John Skinner, former Chapter and Western Division American Fisheries Society President. The fund provides monetary travel awards for deserving graduate students or exceptional undergraduate students to attend the American Fisheries Society (AFS) Annual Meeting. The 2017 meeting will be held August 20-24 in Tampa, Florida.

Any student who is active in fisheries or related aquatic disciplines, and has not previously won a full Skinner award, is eligible to apply. Awardees are chosen by a committee of the AFS Education Section. Selection is based on academic qualifications, professional service, and reasons for attending the meeting. Travel support up to US$800 will be made available to successful applicants. Award winners also receive a one-year paid membership to AFS.

Both Part I (student form) and Part II(advisor form) of the completed application must be received no later than 1 April 2017 at midnight PST. Parts I and II of the application are separate documents. This is Part II and should be filled out and submitted by the applicant’s advisor. Please limit all answers to the space provided. Additional material will not be considered in evaluating applicants. Please complete the form and submit by email (, preferred) or send one hard copy to the address above. There are two parts to the application. The applicant fills out Part I (separate form) and the applicant’s advisor fills out Part II (this form). The advisor should send this form (Part II) of the application separately from Part I, which should be sent by the applicant. Specific Instructions:

  • Each field below has a specified word limit for your response. Please limit your response to that number of words or fewer. Your response should be in the space below the field. Additional material will NOT be considered.
  • The candidate’s application will be evaluated based on four criteria: 1) AFS involvement, 2) Professionalism and leadership, 3) Reason to attend the Annual Meeting, and 4) Faculty advisor’s input from Part II.
  • There are two parts to the application: Part I is to be filled out and submitted by the applicant; Part II is filled out and submitted separately by the faculty advisor.
  • A written signature is not required. Please type your name in the signature line to certify the application.
  • Upon receiving a completeapplication (i.e., both Part I and Part II), the Skinner Committee chair will acknowledge receipt byan email to the applicant. If the applicant (i.e., the student) does not receive this email within 5 days of submission, it is the responsibility of the applicant to contact the Skinner Committee chair to ensure that the application was received.
  • Applicants will be notified of the results prior to the meeting’s early registration deadline.
