2007 Form B – Take Home DBQ

Directions for DBQ: your work will be typed, intro paragraph only and four POV total. Answer questions 1 thru 6 first, you may bullet your answers. Then you will want to time yourself for the fifteen minutes of prep, do not go over, this will not help you when completing the in-class DBQS. Write on the packet, practice writing in the margins, mark docs POV for ones that you would do POV for, etc . . . and remember, time yourself. Please see the hints in your syllabus. Third, complete the POV chart, five in total. Fourth, type your intro (remember to answer both aspects of the question and underline your thesis) and four POV (just the POV, not full paragraphs) try not to go over twenty minutes doing this, again the time aspect is very important. You will need a peer review aspect as well, a peer will analyze and critique your intro and POV, I want to see their marks and they must print and sign their name.

Additional Directions: Below you will find some questions too briefly (very brief, some require a one word answer) answer about the DBQ (historical context questions) and you will also see a POV exercise sheet. You will need to do POV for at least five documents; this will encourage you to shoot for more then four when actually completing the in-class DBQ, but remember for this exercise you only need to type four. Also, for the groups, please put the group you would place it in (1 thru 3).

1.  What system, extending out of Medieval Europe was still causing issues in Europe at this time?

2.  What was coming to an end in France during the late sixteenth century? How did Henry IV end this religious tension (what was passed)?

3.  Who was Louis XIII’s main advisor? What system of government did he want to establish in France?

4.  Who was the French monarch during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries? What stance did he take concerning the nobles?

5.  Why would the selling of noble titles anger the old nobility (also think of the Duke of Buckingham in England during the reigns of James I and Charles I)?

6.  What and who were the intendants? Were they considered nobility?

Question: Describe and analyze concepts of nobility in France over the period from the late sixteenth century to the late eighteenth century

Brief Background: Traditional (sword) nobility was based on military service to the king, but beginning in the 16th century, the fiscal needs of the French monarchy led to the practice of selling government offices that conferred nobility. These newer nobles, who purchased offices in royal or local governments, were known as robe nobles.
