Mission

The Heal the Children Program promotes and supports research in the department of Pediatrics at Rush University Medical Center.

The Heal the Children Programwill be funding a limited number of research grants to support research projects proposed by faculty, fellows, and residents in the Department of Pediatrics.Call for application will be once a year.

Eligibility criteria

  • Applicants for the Heal the Children Program Research grant must be faculty, fellows, or residentsin the Department of Pediatrics.
  • Resubmission of grants that were not funded in FY17 are eligible for resubmission.
  • Each applicant is recipient of one award/year
  • Research projects in all mission areas: basic research, clinical research, educational research, community/global health research. Quality improvement and clinical effectiveness projects will be also considered if they carry high clinical care value.
  • Applications that favor a team-based research approach by including learners and collaborators are encouraged.

General Guidelines

  • For FY18, the Heal the Children Program offers three grants for up to $5,000 and two grants for up to $10,000
  • Grant period begins July 1, 2017 and concludes June 30, 2018.
  • Funds can be used only as originally approved by the granting committee.
  • Proposals must be approved by the applicant’s Division Chief.
  • Budgets of up to $5,000 for small grants and up to $10,000 for larger grants will be considered.
  • Projects performed at sites outside of Rush Children’s Hospital may require special approval. Email Dr. Susan Chubinskaya with questions about the eligibility of projects:
  • Proposals seeking faculty salary support, or requests for gift or gas cards, meal or parking vouchers will not be considered. External services that can be invoiced or internal billing from Rush CORE facilities. are allowed. Use of funding to support personnel’s salary is reviewed on case-by-case basis by the selection committee. Multi-year projects are not permitted, but extensions beyond the grant date may be requested for special circumstances.
  • Any information technology-related purchases deemed essential to the project by the awards committee must be approved by Department of Pediatrics IT. All hardware and software will be considered property of the Department, and the Department will determine appropriate disposition of such items at the end of the project.
  • Travel funds to support the presentation of research findings may be requested.
  • Funds will be made available only as expenditures occur. Purchase of lab/research equipment and materials should be coordinated with pediatrics accounting for invoice payment.
  • Grant’s administration will be provided by the Departmental Research Administrative office

Proposal Procedures

  • Submission: Email the completed proposal, along with curriculum vitae or NIH format biosketch, and an email from your Division Chief acknowledging approval of the grant. All application materials must be submitted by email to Dr. Susan Chubinskaya and must be received no later than Monday February 27, 2017at 5 p.m. Letters of support from research mentors or collaborators can be included as needed.
  1. Research Approval: Research involving human and animal subjects, radioactive materials, and potential biological hazards must be reviewed and approved in accordance with the University's general policies. No grant will be reviewed unless proper documentations/protocols are submitted to the appropriate committees for their review and approval. The applicant should send a copy of any submission or approval letters as a PDF attachment. No funds will be released until all committee approvals have been obtained and a copy of the approval letter is received by the selection committee.
  2. Selection process: A Heal the Children Program selection committee will consist of senior faculty and vice-chairs of the department.The transparency in the selection process is guaranteed. The review of research proposals by the committee will be completed by April 03rd, 2017. The allocation of awards will be finalized onMay 10th, 2017, Faculty Development Committee Meeting.
  • Grant Award Notification: Applicants will be notified of the committee’s decision by the Vice-Chair of Research, Dr. Chubinskaya. Notification will be sent no later than May 18th, 2017. A confirmation email that funding can be released will be sent to the applicant following review for compliance to guidelines.
  • Final Report:A report shall be submitted to the committee at the conclusion of the grant period informing the committee of the results of the research, and including a brief financial statement. Evidence of scholarly productivity and dissemination (i.e. publications, presentations to scientific meetings, etc) as well as arecord of submitted applications for extramural funding will be shown through final reports.
  • Publications: Publications of the results of research projects supported by this grant should carry a printed acknowledgement of financial assistance from the Rush Department of Pediatrics- Heal the Children Program.
  • Records: Record of grant application, notification of award, final report, faculty’ scholarly productivity and financial operations of the departmental funding should be forwarded to , , and .
