Santiago Canyon College Holds Eighth Annual Commencement

May 3—Santiago Canyon College holds its eighth annual commencement exercises on Thursday, May 31, 4:30 p.m. on campus at Strenger Plaza. Approximately 780 students are eligible to graduate with the class of 2007. The youngest graduate is 18, the oldest is 54, and the

average age is 24. SCC graduates are transferring to Chapman University, USC, U.C. Irvine, U.C.L.A., U.C. Berkeley, C.S.U. Fullerton, C.S.U. Long Beach, and other public and private institutions throughout California and the U.S.

Some SCC success stories include:

Orange resident Rick Hurtado, 41, is a field superintendent for the City of Orange Water Department. Thanks to Santiago Canyon College’s Water Utility Sciences program, Rick has been steadily promoted (from maintenance worker to supervisor to field superintendent) over the past 15 years. He’s taken all the classes necessary for completion of the water distribution and water treatment certificates, and has one class left to complete the wastewater program. “People drive from all over Southern California to attend SCC’s water classes,” Rick said. “It’s a blessing that the college is close by in Orange, where I live and work.”

San Clemente resident Kari Moore, 18, has applied to Pt. Loma Nazarene University (PLNU) in San Diego where she hopes to pursue a nursing degree. Kari was a member of the SCC women’s soccer state championship team and the women’s track and field team. She was named the most valuable player of the 2006 California Community Colleges Commission on Athletics Soccer Championships and she currently holds the school record in the 800 meters (2:22.78). “Being able to win the state championship in soccer was a great accomplishment because we worked so hard to achieve that goal,” Kari said.
