Confederate National Championships
Match Report
Perfect weather greeted the competitors of the 2007 Confederate Nationals (Quinn Moore Memorial). 69 shooters took to the line Friday morning to take part in the new format. 3 consecutive 800-point aggregates. AMU’s SFC Singley took an early lead with a 198-10x in the 1st standing match, followed closely by 3 others with 197’s. AMU’s Sigrist took the Gen. Morgan trophy with a 200-12x. Singley continued in the lead with his 12x clean. AMU’s Hopper fired a measly 200-3x to start an historic rapid fire run. When it came to the prone position the civilians took over. The 300RF win went to Kentucky’s Mark DelCotto with a fine 200-11x. At 600 yards Georgia’s Wayne Forshee fired another RBGC 200, with 8x’s. When the smoke cleared on Friday afternoon, the man who started in the lead (Singley) maintained the lead with a 792-41x.
Tennessee’s Ronnie Morris called the 1st relay to the line promptly at 0830 Saturday, Hopper set the pace early firing a 198-7x for the Gen. Hill trophy win. AMU’s Tomlinson put his name on the Bragg trophy by firing a 100-10x in RF sitting totaling a 200-18x to win $150 for 20 shots. Hopper fired a perfect 400 in the rapids to maintain the lead Saturday. As like Friday when it came to belly shooting the civilians took over, Forshee fired a 14x clean and a 16x clean respectively to win both the 300 and 600-yard line. But it was not enough to overcome AMU’s Farro who had a consistent day with 196/199/199/199 for a 793-38x for the Benning trophy win.
After 2 days of shooting it was time to start awarding for the aggregates. Hopper easily took the rapid-fire trophy with a perfect 800-32x. The Slow fire win, with a nice 785-23x went to DelCotto, and that slow fire aggregate was enough to put him on top for the Lee Trophy win with a 1583-61x, followed closely by Singleys 1580-69x and Farros 1580-64x.
Day 3 – The Confederate Riflemen’s Match, no sighters, no alibis. This was a horse race from the start with DelCotto (197) giving up a point to Hopper, Singley and Green who all had 198’s. The chase for the big cup (Quinn Moore Trophy) tightened during sitting as DelCotto dropped 2 points, when Singley fired a 200-13x to pull within 1 point for the overall. But for the day it was Singley in the lead down 2 with 22x’s to Hoppers 19x’s, followed closely by Green with 18x’s. At the 300, Singley and Green both dropped a point where Hopper had cleaned his 11th and 12th consecutive string of Rapid Fire becoming the 1st person in history to shoot a 1200 with 48x’s. And this being done with a service rifle. That 200 put him in the lead for the day. DelCotto fired a 200 picking up a point on Singley for the Quinn Moore Trophy. It would all come down to the 600. Singley and Green both had problems at the 600 and fell out of the running. Green Managed a 790-35x for 3rd place, Hopper held strong with a 195-5x to give him a 793-31 and 2nd place for the day. Firing a 198-11x for a 793-34x Mark DelCotto won the Confederate Riflemans Match. This also gave him a dominant (2376-95x) 10 point win over Singley and Farro for the Quinn Moore Memorial Trophy.
