He pointed to the burden of injury claims to the club.

Details on the clubs plans for pitch development and dressing rooms were outlined.

Liam Carter chairman of the juvenile section thanked the hurling section for their assistance during the year. He again appealed for adult and former players to assist with coaching. Liam reported on the achievements of hurling teams in the Juvenile section. The participation of U.C.D. in the Dublin Hurling Championship was discussed.

All speakers spoke against their participation. The meeting was reminded that only a motion passed at congress could stop their participation in the Dublin hurling championship.

CHAIRMAN’S ADDRESS

I took up the position of chairman of the hurling section in January of 2007.

I would like to consider myself privileged to be Chairman on this auspicious year. The year Ballyboden St.Enda’s won their first Senior Hurling Championship, the date October 26th 2007. Never to be forgotten.

Congratulations also to the under 21 and minor teams for winning their championships in 2006. Both were played after last years AGM.

This year like many other years we had a good crop of home produced players. Like all crops they need a lot of nursing during the early stages that is where the good people who give their Saturday mornings come to the surface. Just look around the club house, Cherryfield, the Hermitage etc. Hundreds of youngsters can be seen with hurleys. This year we reaped a great harvest. I wish also to acknowledge the contribution of the local schools and teachers.

But not all the players were home grown, our captain and full back Stephen Perkins joined us from our neighbours Good Counsel.

And where would we be going without the two boys from the model CountyWexford, Malachy and Enda.

Senior Team

As we are all aware Championships don’t come easy, minutes, hours, days and months went into preparing this team. During the dark winter evenings it was gym work, then on into spring and early summer when floods had to be coped with, but as the weather settled down, long grass was the problem (long grass gave Liam Hogan convulsions)On into autumn the relentless training continued. Now that the evenings had got dark, floodlit pitches were found and the training continued unabated. There was no let up.

Now all this was very demanding on the panel and mentors, but your had your reward when you proudly brought the cup back to Ballyboden. To all concerned I want to say you were great, in fact you were brilliant.

The Senior “B”Team reached the Intermediate Championship final, had the misfortune to have a player put off after only two minutes and were still only beaten by a couple of points. Many thank to Emmet Pullen and his mentors.

The Junior “A” Team managed by Don O’Neill, Mick Kennedy and Martin Donohue up to the championship defeat and by John Healy and Ken Keary for the remainder of the campaign. They reached the semi final of the championship and after some strange decisions by the referee were beaten by one point. Well done to all.

The Junior “C” Team managed by John McCormack and his team also reached the semi final, were eventually beaten by a very strong Craobh Ciaran team. Again well done to all.

The Minor “A” Team managed by Francis Sharkey, put in a big effort at training, also played a number of friendly matches up and down the country against top class teams. However luck was not on their side, being drawn away against the two strongest teams and were beaten narrowly on both occasions.

The Minor “C” Team managed by Aidan Kennedy. I had the privilege of being at some of the teams games, again a great crowd of lads, they won some and lost some but they always enjoyed themselves. Aidan ploughed a lone furrow here. He could have done with a bit more help.

Now there are some people that I want to say a special thank you to.

Richard Condron, our Secretary. Richard who is very efficient and good at his job gets through an enormous amount of work.. He is approachable and available at all times. Well done Richard.

Appreciation is due to Danny Griffin out Sponsorship King., the many generous sponsors of the race night, sponsorship of meals after matches and many other events throughout the hurling calendar.

P.J. Donoghue, our grounds man continued on though often suffering from a painful back. Thanks P.J.

Noel Sheridan, always willing to give a dig out.

Appreciations

The work of the committee would not be possible without the help of many people and we extend our thanks to.

Paddy Walsh and the Executive Committee for their support

Gerry Maher for looking after the sale and supply of hurleys

Jody Moran for his assistance with player injury claims.

Ned Slattery and all of the bar staff.

The shop committee on their work in the shop

All adult Mentors and selectors

Hurley repairs - John Cummins.

SECRETARY’S REPORT 2007

The club achieved our first ever Senior A title. Well done to the players, management and back up personnel on this magnificent achievement.

The club fielded

-4 adult teams

-2 minor teams

-1 under 21 teams in 2007 competitions.

-

The work of the Committee included:

  • Obtaining approval of Executive for various post holders
  • Registration, regrading and transfers of players
  • Networking with managers on team panels, playing arrangements, kit requirements, other needs
  • Monitoring injury scheme with Jody Moran and Membership
  • Attendance by the Board Delegate at monthly hurling Committee meetings of CountyBoard in ParnellPark
  • Organising a fund raiser at Harold’s Cross Track
  • Approval of Expenses including seeking approval of Executive.
  • Contact with other sections.

I would like to also thank all the players and organisers for the very special St Stephen’s day last year where we had a memorial trophy for Declan Maguire. We look forward to a similar event later this year.

Many of our adult players already help out with juvenile teams and they are an advertisement as to how players should conduct themselves.

Honours

We would like to congratulate players that represented Dublin in various grades:

Senior: Gary Mc Guire, Stephen Hiney, David Curtin, Emmett Carroll

Under 21: Michael Mc Garry, Shane Durkin, Declan Keating and selector John Keating. Congratulation to all on winning the Leinster championship and reaching the All Ireland Final

Minor: Finn Mc Garry, Eanna Walsh, Niall Mc Morrow, Alan Mc Mullan, Peter Buckeridge, Andrew Kiernan. Again congratulations to all on winning the Leinster title.

Dublin Colleges: : Finn Mc Garry, Eanna Walsh, Niall Mc Morrow, Alan Mc Mullan, Peter Buckeridge, Martin O’ Sullivan, Dave O ‘Connor, Paul Ryan

I will outline the competitions that hurling teams participated in for 2007 under individual team reports.

Fixtures

Our adult, minor and under 21 teams participated in 81 competitive games in Dublin during 2007and a further 15 challenge games around the Country.

The league/championship offered good quality competition to our teams.

The championships for our 4 adult teams were played on a round robin system

The senior A team had 4 teams in their group, the Senior B, Junior A had 6 teams and Junior Cteam had 11 teams in their group.

Players who were eligible to play Senior B, Junior A and Junior C at the start of the season were not allowed to step back down if they played one game at a higher grade in the championship during the year. This rule stretched our resources.

Great credit is due to the team managements for maximizing player resources.

Our hurling committee made representation to the GAC to spread out fixtures over the hurling week. This was carried out where possible.

Other clubs are also making representation with their own agenda.

I would like to thank our club PRO Gerry O’ Sullivan for his assistance with updating hurling section information on the web and the club notes in the daily papers. Mentors should pass on information to Gerry for inclusion in his updates.

I wish to thank players, mentors, fellow officers for their co-operation during the year.

2008

The senior A team will compete in the senior A championship and league

0ur second adult team will compete in the Senior B championship and the Senior A league if the results of the final league match is satisfactory.

The Junior A team will compete in the Junior A championship. This team is undefeated after seven rounds of a 12 team league and again will have to compete in the Intermediate league if this success continues.

This level of competition for our adult teams combined with demands for Dublin inter county panels will stretch our resources to the limit in 2008.
