A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO extend a warm welcome to Admiral Thad W. Allen, Commandant of the United States Coast Guard, on the Occasion of his visit to the Palmetto State to attend A FESTIVAL HONORING HIM in Newberry County, and to offer best wishes for a successful tenure leading the United States Coast Guard.

Whereas, Admiral Thad W. Allen, Commandant of the United States Coast Guard, will be honored during his May 2325, 2008, visit to the Palmetto State, with a celebratory festival hosted on Saturday, May 24th, by former shipmate and prominent Newberry County citizen, Henry Brooks, his wife, Mina, and their family, of Pomaria; and

Whereas, approximately a dozen other former shipmates from New Hampshire to Florida and from Pennsylvania to Louisiana will be attending the festival known as the 23rd Annual Rib Picking and Blue Grass Jam to be held in Newberry at Uncle Bemo’s Ole Log Cabin on Halfacre Road; and

Whereas, Admiral Allen, a native of Tuscon, Arizona, was reared in a Coast Guard family by Wilma Allen and Clyde Allen, a retired Coast Guard Chief Damage Controlman and World War II veteran. Seeking to follow his father’s footsteps and serve in the Coast Guard, Admiral Allen attended the United States Coast Guard Academy, where he earned a degree in 1971 and was a standout football player. Admiral Allen later earned graduate degrees from George Washington University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology while building a distinguished career of public service; and

Whereas, acclaimed as a exemplary leader in times of crisis, Admiral Allen gained renown following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, for his leadership of Coast Guard forces as Commander of the Atlantic Area and the United States Maritime Defense Zone Atlantic, and later for his leadership in the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005, where he served as Principal Federal Official for response and recovery operations while also serving as the Coast Guard Chief of Staff; and

Whereas, on May 25, 2006, Admiral Allen’s lifetime of distinguished service to his nation culminated in his selection as twentythird Commandant of the United States Coast Guard, which is America’s oldest continuous seagoing service, a federal law enforcement agency, the largest component of the Department of Homeland Security, and a branch of the armed forces consisting of approximately 40,150 men and women on active duty, 7,000 civilians, 8,000 reservists, and 34,000 volunteer auxiliarists; and

Whereas, among his countless professional accomplishments, Admiral Allen also is a loving husband to his wife, Pam, their three children, and their two grandchildren; and

Whereas, in the midst of managing the enormously critical, complex, and daunting responsibilities of Commandant of the United States Coast Guard, Admiral Allen faithfully maintains friendships established as a young Coast Guardsman, and will travel to Newberry County to be honored at a celebratory festival hosted by the family of former shipmate Henry Brooks of Pomaria. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, extend a warm welcome to Admiral Thad W. Allen, Commandant of the United States Coast Guard, on the occasion of his visit to the Palmetto State to attend a celebratory festival honoring him in Newberry County, and to offer best wishes for a successful tenure leading the United States Coast Guard.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Admiral Thad W. Allen.
