A HOUSE RESOLUTION
TO HONOR THE LATE EDWIN MALLOY, JR., OF CHERAW, FOR HIS TREMENDOUS CONTRIBUTIONS AND OUTSTANDING SERVICE TO THE PEE DEE AREA COUNCIL OF THE BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA AND TO HIS COMMUNITY.
Whereas, Edwin Malloy, Jr., was born September 9, 1917, in Cheraw, South Carolina, as the eldest son of Margaret Adger Manning and Edwin Malloy, Sr.; and
Whereas, a graduate of the United States Naval Academy in 1940, Mr. Malloy served during World War II as a commissioned officer on the “USS Colorado” in the Pacific, earning the rank of Lieutenant Commander and eventually Commander before retiring from the Navy in 1946. He received his Master of Science degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1945; and
Whereas, after completing his military service, he returned to Cheraw and became associated with Cheraw Yarn Mills, where he remained employed from 1946 through 1956 and served as the secretary and as a director from 1963 until his death on February 2, 2005; and
Whereas, a devout Christian, Mr. Malloy was a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church in Cheraw, where he served as a deacon and elder, as well as chairing many committees; and
Whereas, he was a very active civic and community leader in many varied capacities including service as the chairman of the Malloy Foundation, as chairman of Historic Cheraw, as a leader with the Cheraw Kiwanis Club, as a department commander with the American Legion, as a member of the board of trustees for the Presbyterian Home of South Carolina, and as a member of the board of visitors for Presbyterian College; and
Whereas, this truly outstanding man was devoted to the Boy Scouts of America. He served on the executive board of the Pee Dee Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America from 1967 until his passing in 2005 and served as president of the Pee Dee Area Council in 1975 and 1976; and
Whereas, in 1971, as recognition for his strong dedication to the Pee Dee Area Council, Mr. Malloy received the prestigious Silver Beaver Award, the highest honor bestowed on an adult volunteer for distinguished service within a local council; and
Whereas, he also received the Distinguished Citizen Award from the Pee Dee Area Council in 1985 to honor his service to the community; and
Whereas, as a true act of Mr. Malloy’s altruistic nature and love for the Pee Dee Area Council, he left a substantial sum of money to the Pee Dee Area Council in his will to be spread out over fifteen years; and
Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives take great pleasure in recognizing individuals who have devoted so much time and dedication to fostering the youth of our State and is privileged to honor his selfless and generous contributions to his community and the Boy Scouts of America. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, honor the late Edwin Malloy, Jr., of Cheraw for his tremendous contributions and outstanding service to the Pee Dee Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America and to his community.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. William M. Malloy, Jr.
