Reporting to the Executive Director, the Operations Director oversees all operational and administrative functions for Baltimore Chesapeake Bay Outward Bound School (BCBOBS). This position supervises administrative and field staff of approximately 30 people.
The Operations Director is a new position for BCBOBS and is an important hire for the organization. The OD will play a pivotal role in guiding the organization through a period of significant growth. The ideal applicant will be adept at building systems to support growth and have an eye for efficient operations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities / The Operations Director (OD) will have both internal and external facing responsibilities with oversight and management responsibility for all day to day operations.
· Strategy Execution: BCBOBS has developed a three-year strategic plan. The OD will provide leadership and input for all strategic plan implementation processes with the Executive Director and leadership team as they implement the strategic plan. The right candidate will have strong project management skills, the ability to create accountability systems and delegate work appropriately.
· Budget Development/Management:With the support of the Finance and Administration Manager, the OD will prepare and submit an annual operational budget, manage effectively within this budget and report accurately on progress made and challenges encountered; ensuring the continued financial viability of BCBOBS’ operational areas through sound fiscal management.
· Annual Operations Planning:Establish and implement proactive operational plans, organization structure and programs to achieve long-lasting organizational success.
· Program Oversight:The OD will oversee the management of the School’s program quality, course curriculum, sales and admissions, logistics, safety, risk management, training and programmatic effectiveness. The OD will participate in the systems of incident command, Local Emergency Response Plans, Local Operating Procedures, New Program Plans/Site Approvals, rescue cache, and safety/incident reporting for programs.
· Program Development: In tandem with the leadership team, be a thought leader around specific topics/emerging practice areas and/or ways to refine current program offerings.
· Outcomes and Evaluation:The OD will lead a new effort to shift the organization toward data driven programming implementing a formal program evaluation process.
· Policy: Establish and implement organizational policies and procedures.
· Community and Relationship Building: The OD will maintain a highly visible community presence through participation in activities and committees that are beneficial to Outward Bound. The OD will also work to build strong long-term relationships with customers (local school districts, charter schools and youth organizations) and its support structure (Board of Trustees and local community leaders).
Demonstrable Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities / BCBOBS is recruiting for an experienced team leader whose skillset includes:
· Excellence in organizational management with the ability to coach a senior-level staff to manage high-performance teams and develop and implement program strategies.
· Excellent project management skills with proven ability to plan, organize, prioritize, and deploy workload across team members.
· Deep experience in budgeting and fiscal management.
· Track record of effectively initiating/managing cross-functional teams and multi-disciplinary projects.
· Experience leading initiatives with a complex array of programs with the ability to leverage strengths across functional areas.
· Critical thinking, and analytical, decisive decision making.
· Communicate skillfully and clearly to staff key objectives and tactics necessary to achieve organizational goals.
· Results oriented: Hold others accountable, achieve targets, and meet deadlines.
· Be adaptable and efficient under pressure.
Education and Work Experience / · Bachelor degree and 7-10 years of management experience or any similar combination of education and experience.
· Management experience with P&L responsibility required.
· Passion for the outdoors, challenge and adventure.
· Experience working with youth.
· Ability to participate in vigorous to moderate physical activity including but not limited to running, swimming, backpacking and canoeing.
· Ability to lift and move a minimum of 40 pounds.
· Sitting at a desk or computer 70% of time or greater.
Schedule / · This is a full-time position. Working hours are 8:30am-5:00pm, M-F. Position requires flexibility with the work schedule. Some evening and weekend hours are required.
Compensation / · Salary is $72,000 to $88,000 commensurate with experience.
· Benefits including Medical, Dental, and Vision for the individual employee (BCBOBS contributes seventy-five percent to administrative employees’ total monthly premium).
· Administrative Staff are eligible to participate in a 401K with match after one year.
