Maxwell HS, a Corrective Action school cited for High School English, and Math, along with Jamaica/SDA, its non-public partner proposes “Sub-Trax” as its theme for the 2006—2009 LTG. This project is being proposed in an effort to improve student achievement in the areas of ELA and Math.
“Sub-Trax” involves students researching, studying and becoming experts in Math A. Students will use Rap and other genres of urban music to create instructional podcasts that explain the complexities of Mathematics. Topics for these student created podcasts will include Problem Solving, Probability, and Measurement in Algebra, Geometry, and trigonometry. The podcasts will be an integral part of the “Sub-Trax” website. This site will also include math and software tutorials and mathematical poetry.

All activities in “Sub-Trax” will be aligned to the NY State ELA Standard 1, 2, and 3, Reading, Writing, and Speaking on the 9th grade level as well as MST 3 in the Measurement, Problem Solving and Communication Content/Process Strands on the 9th grade level.

In order to facilitate the objectives of the “Sub-Trax” project, teachers will receive after school staff development, push in support, and will participate in Local/Regional Peer Review sessions. This project will culminate yearly with teachers preparing Learning Experience Outlines to present at Local/Regional Peer Review Sessions as a way to assess the validity of the project and help teachers improve classroom instruction based on the New York State Learning Standards.
