A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY UPON THE DEATH OF RICHLAND COUNTY DEPUTY SHERIFF BYRON KEITH CANNON, AND TO EXTEND THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the members of the General Assembly were deeply saddened to learn of the untimely death of Richland County Deputy Sheriff Byron Keith Cannon, at age twentyfour, on May 4, 2005. At the time of his death, he was responding to a call of someone who needed his protection; and

Whereas, the beloved son of Vallie Cannon and Annie Cockfield Cannon, he was a brother and friend to Kevin Cannon of Marion, a devoted grandson to Flora Cockfield of Marion, uncle to Caleb Cannon and Jacob Cannon of Marion, and a loving fiancé to Kyleigh Chandler of Irmo; and

Whereas, a 1996 graduate of South Florence High School, Keith earned an Associate Degree in criminal justice from FlorenceDarlington Technical School in 1998 and later earned a Bachelors Degree in criminal justice from the University of South Carolina in 2002; and

Whereas, possessing a true passion for law enforcement, Keith worked for the South Carolina Department of Probation, Parole and Pardon Services before becoming a Deputy Sheriff in Richland County in October 2003, and was promoted in September 2004 to work on the Community Action Team in Northern Richland County; and

Whereas, exhibiting a certain charisma and a unique sincerity when addressing the needs of others, Keith was known in the communities in which he worked to be a man of action, unafraid to undertake serious projects that required his constant attention and even physical labor; and

Whereas, Keith had a heart for both the young and the elderly, working with Boy Scout troops and bicycle safety programs for children, and educating senior citizens in the Richland County community on preventing crime; and

Whereas, it is with great honor that the members of the General Assembly pause to reflect on the life of Richland County Deputy Sheriff Byron Keith Cannon, to recognize the ultimate sacrifice he gave in performing his duties in a career he loved and in a community that will be forever grateful for his tireless service. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the death of Richland County Deputy Sheriff Byron Keith Cannon, and extend the deepest sympathy to his family and friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to his parents, Vallie Cannon and Annie Cockfield Cannon.
