A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE THE WOFFORD COLLEGE BOWL TEAM ON ITS UNPRECEDENTED PERFORMANCE IN ADVANCING TO THE NATIONAL COLLEGE BOWL TOURNAMENT AND TO WISH IT THE BEST IN ALL FUTURE COMPETITION.

Whereas, the Wofford College Bowl team has brought great pride and acclaim to the Wofford College community in completing an outstanding regular season in February 2005 by defeating fourteen other teams in the Region 5 tournament and advancing to the College Bowl nationals in Seattle, Washington, for the first time in the college’s history; and

Whereas, the team tenaciously competed against an army of varsity scholars from sixteen other college campuses, including the University of Georgia, Stanford University, and Northwestern University, holding its own while displaying great skill and sportsmanship; and

Whereas, team captain Benjamin Ingram, a senior mathematics major and Phi Beta Kappa initiate from Florence, South Carolina, earned national distinction as the third highest individual scorer in the tournament, was honored with the tournament’s 2005 Pat Moonen Sportsperson Award, and was selected to participate on the eightmember AllAmerica team; and

Whereas, with veteran quiz bowl competitors, freshmen twins Tejas and Vedhas Doshi of Moore, performing well in their first year of college competition, Wofford looks forward to the coming years of sure success; and

Whereas, with all College Bowl participants being South Carolinians, South Carolina as a whole takes pride in their accomplishments as products of the State’s educational system; and

Whereas, the members of the Wofford College Bowl team, including juniors Benjamin McCraw of Inman and Melia Brannon of Taylors, freshman Tejas and Vedhas Doshi of Moore, and senior Benjamin Ingram of Florence, as well as their coaches, Dr. Natalie Grinnell, Dr. Mark Byrnes, and Professor Matt Cathey, deserve public recognition across our state for their outstanding record. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, congratulate the Wofford College Bowl team on its unprecedented performance in advancing to the national College Bowl tournament and to wish it the best in all future competition.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. Natalie Grinnell, Wofford College Bowl coach.
